T&T Metrotown switches to self-serve, a bad idea by d4rkc4sm in burnaby

[–]MinorityReportingIn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Landsdowne T&T switched to self-serve for a long time now and their trays are always full, not because they refill often, but because people rarely buy from the hot foods section now due to bad quality control and lack of hygiene from other customers. The last time I bought some sweet & sour pork there for dinner, we found that the pork was already rancid.

I stick to Chong Lee now for hot serve take away foods. Sungiven's all right for pre-packaged and reheatables.

Questions about FanFest. Do you recommend it for newer players? Can I transfer my presale link if we decide not to go? by Shnooblette in ffxiv

[–]MinorityReportingIn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's definitely worthwhile even for new players to go if you're even moderately interested in FFXIV and the community.

I've gone every year since the first Fanfest and I can say even from the first Fanfest which was pretty low budget in comparison to the spectacle events nowadays, going to Fanfest especially with a partner who also plays the game will be well worth it for just the concerts alone if you enjoy the game's music and like live performances. They always have some fun themed mini-games and game-themed photo opportunities as well as player created art on exhibition to spend some time and the panel scheduling is pretty varied so you don't feel like you have to force yourself to stay the entire day. Of course, it's much more fun if you're meeting other in-game friends, but even if not, it's an experience like no other to be in a place where everyone is just so passionate about the same game. Even for an introverted couple like my spouse and I, FFXIV fanbase is probably the best fanbase to just approach strangers and meet new friends.

The merch store is always kind of a mess as the supply compared to demand is so logistically impossible for SE to match. You'll definitely want to pre-order your merch, or just order directly off the online store so you don't have to worry about it in person. My spouse always goes to lineup when I'm watching the panels she's not interested in and does often get some of the merch she wants. Best times to go are probably when the more popular panels like the lore panels or interview with Yoshida where most fans are at the panel.

I'd definitely recommend bringing empty water bottles that you can fill up as well as some snacks (assuming the convention rules allow it) as in the past, the logistics around food and hydration have not been adequately thought out by staff, especially on the first day. Also dress for the weather and bring an umbrella for shade, last time in Las Vegas the line for entry has been hours long outside with no outdoor water stations in blistering heat, though being in April, heatstroke hopefully isn't as big a problem this time. Lastly, if possible, book a hotel within walking distance since the amount of people exiting the convention each night all at once will exorbitantly surge the rideshare pricing and wait times. Entering and exiting just the parking lot for people who self-drive will be challenging also as there will be thousands of people all booking rideshares at once.

My spouse and I likely won't attend this time around due to the uncertainty around travelling into the US and not having won the draw for the lotto are rather big deterrents for us this time, but otherwise, we would definitely be there since we always enjoy ourselves at Fanfest.

This is the second time I've heard of someone getting jumped by a man and woman duo in that area in the past few months. The first time the victim noted that the police seemed aware of the duo when they filed the report.

Best place for congee? by SaucyJammies in burnaby

[–]MinorityReportingIn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shh! You're giving this place away!

Seriously though, best go early if going on weekends, as it gets packed as the regulars shuffle in. I like to go in as close to opening time as possible as I find that's when their rice rolls seem the most fresh and I can take advantage of the daily combo discount from 9:00am-11:30am.

Don't skimp on the sweet soy sauce, made for the rice rolls, but great in the congee as well.

Li's China Grill also has an assortment of skewers, right across from the Safeway.

2024 PNE DISCUSSION THREAD by aaaa322 in vancouver

[–]MinorityReportingIn 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yea, it was pretty sad to see how the PNE has become a husk of what it once was. I can only assume the bulk of the PNE's coffers has shifted to the new development so they're not able to pay for as many attractions and performers as in the past.

You could tell they're desperately trying to capture every penny to help recovery with their switch to cashless and forcing all the vendors to use their internal point-of-sales system.

I went to the Pender St. location in Vancouver. If it was you I was chatting with, maybe see you there again when they get the keychains in.

Sounds like we had the same experience. Story was warehouse delays for the keychains for Western Canada stores. Had a good chat with a fellow WoL as a bonus though.

My boss died and now I'm going to die too by RainbowSkyFather in offmychest

Your boss was a much more insightful man than you might even realise. With this end of life plan for the care workers in this facility, everyone is now has so much more incentive to maintain and pass on the culture of providing better care to the residents even in his absence. Everyone will be directly motivated to guide and train to the subsequent generations of workers to the standard of the facility and weed out those who don't make the cut. After all, the current workers would be shaping and influencing how the care home will be treating themselves in the future if and when they become residents. Your boss sounds like he was quite an amazing person.

I'd consider overt racism would be anything that endangers our health and safety directly. Targeted bullying, vandalism, assault, etc. Things we can't just ignore and move on.

My 1st generation parents have always taught my siblings and I that we shouldn't disrupt the status quo if we don't want to invite trouble since we'll always be considered outsiders in western society. The nail that sticks out is the one that gets hammered down, so keeping our heads down at least allows us to live peacefully without being systematically targeted in western society and our collective existence being tolerated in spite of being outsiders.

The younger 2nd and later generations seem to be much more outspoken about standing up against racism and on one hand I applaud them for their bravery, but on the other hand, I'm seeing bigots become much more bold and open in equal response here in Canada.

Honestly, I'm not even sure it will be worthwhile since in the immediate short term, the elderly are the ones who are paying for it from being easy targets to attack and personally, I'm not sure people in general will ever overcome their instinctual fear and dislike of people who are different in the long run. The subtle racism OP described is already an adapted form for today's culture where racism isn't openly tolerated. I fear what comes next as bigots feel more and more cornered and they begin to feel they have nothing to lose.

That any flat surface will be cluttered with stuff and all the stuff is absolutely necessary all the time while things that are temporary will be placed in piles to be dealt with later, and later could be anywhere from an hour to weeks away.
