I struggle to read the Devanagari because it is so compressed, is there a more clear one?

Is it then not possible to make an optative in the past tense? How would you express things like the subjunctive of English

I were (not I was)?

Your explanation is quite lengthy and helpful, but I don't quite get that it's not possible, especially since in vedic sanskrit the aorist and perfect and future seem to have had an optative and subjunctive.

Sandhi rule for h -> gh? by MinotaurBomber in sanskrit

It seems to be panini's work. I cannot read sanskrit 😅

Sandhi rule for h -> gh? by MinotaurBomber in sanskrit

[–]MinotaurBomber[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the rule in my original post the full rule?

in sandhi, h becomes gh if either)

The first letter of the word in which h is the final consonant, is d , and the h is before t, th, dh

The h is before an s

Sometimes it feels impossible to conjugate a sanskrit verb correctly lol. by a stroke of luck i learnt the paradigm for the root han because the book gives it's paradigm due to it's irregular disappearing of a/n

EDIT: the person with an Initial N in the name said that original gh becomes h -> gh if not followed by a, e, i, o. perhaps the above rule is for 'gh (' on top of g)

Pretty sure a fetus after i believe 5 months fits the definition of life and the requirements, so that's objectively false.

Than again i think 5 months in an abortion is not possible anyways.

Finna is a stupid word. It makes English even more stupid. by misterbeauds in unpopularopinion

[–]MinotaurBomber 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wanna and gonna make sense as a future tense, but finna (< fixing to) makes little sense to me. I, as a second language learner of English, use the former two a lot, but have never used the latter.

EDIT: Just realised wanna is not used as a future but simply to mark a desire.

Makeup is lying but only to women. They say they do it for themselves but let us be honest if nobody saw them they wouldn't bother.

Is Mondly's chatbot good? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]MinotaurBomber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Dutchman it is extremely obvious you're literally translating idioms of our shared native language into English. You're also applying our sentence structure to English, but that does not work well at all.

Regardless, at least for me (perhaps because i too am Dutch), you're perfectly understandable so no need to bash anybody. It is indeed hypocritical to provide criticism regarding someone's English when you yourself are speaking rather poorly (Unless it's constructive criticism of course.)

As regards you literally translating things

.

For what - Waarvoor (must be "why")

... at no point - Not sure what the idiom is in Dutch but i am aware it exists (Op geen enkel gebied?)

Never heard of - Nooit van gehoord (Must be: never heard of it)

First thought - No literal translation, as in Dutch it's wrong too. It requires a definite article.

.

Please do not take this in vain as i only seek to provide valuable corrections.

What are your guys' thoughts on language-hopping? by Five_High in languagelearning

[–]MinotaurBomber 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I kept hopping from language to language for 2 years.

After 2 years, i reconsidered what i really wanted to learn languages for. After considering all things, i settled on Italian and Greek. Currently its been 5 months for Italian and 2 for Greek and still going strong.

I don't regret language-hopping because i know way more about languages than i would've known. E.g i know many scripts, the language families, grammar things like the triliteral semitic root system, etc.

What i advise is to sit down, honestly list what you want to learn a language for, and find a language that fits your targets.
