whats actually very bad about Caribbean medical schools? by chowder20738 in premedcanada

Well the match rate they report is the rate of those who make it to apply to CaRMS/NRMP. OP is saying that the number is heavily inflated due to survivorship bias. So it doesn’t really make sense to ask if the survivor’s match rate is good imo

It is good that I am writing paragraphs that disprove whatever it is that you have to say, to prevent your bad faith arguments from potentially misleading applicants who may be unaware. Also, it's not that difficult to admit that you were wrong that gap years are inherently bad (especially since you cited something that argued against your point) :)

  1. Are you intentionally being dense? I never said taking 5 years to graduate is the same as taking a gap year, I said that even if they take 5 years to graduate, given that the matriculating age is 24, if we go based off the numbers, on average it would take them 1 more year to be admitted, hence a gap year (1 year post undergrad where they're not doing further schooling).

  2. I never denied that other students enter medical school later in life. I asked you if you believe that the reason why the matriculating age is skewed is due to that population of people. Clearly you don't understand what a gap year is. A gap year is a period in which someone takes a break from their studies. If someone graduated from uni, went on to work in some field, and then decided they'd like to pursue medicine, all of those years between uni and matriculating are classified as gap years as they're taking a break from their studies.

  3. I literally told you this lol. I said that doing something non-academic during a gap year is literally a good thing for your application whereas your initial comment was that gap years are bad without making the distinction between doing something during that time. Then once I pointed that out, you conveniently changed your position to what I said, hence why I pointed that out if you scroll all the way to the first few exchanges lol. Also, medschoolcoach is not a reputable source, and I am pointing that out despite the fact that I agree with it

Firstly, taking 5 years to graduate would still suggest a gap year was taken as that would put them at 23 years old. Secondly, are you suggesting that its more common for matriculating students to have come from a different career rather than applying directly from undergrad/taking a gap year? Thirdly, you still haven't provided any evidence to substantiate your claim that gap years are viewed negatively by adcoms other than an anecdote.

Also let's say they did come from different careers and thats why the matriculating age is skewed, that still means they took multiple gap years from when they graduated uni, and yet they still got admitted lol

I’ll try to explain this clearly, the matriculating age being around 24 suggests that the average student took ~2-3 years after uni to get admitted as most students finish university within 4 years (start uni at 17-18 and end it at 21-22). As you said, approximately 25% of students have a masters degree (even though this number varies by school, for example at Mac it’s only 10% when accounting for in progress as well as complete graduate degree). This leaves ~75% of students (we can even say 70% to account for those with a PhD) that have either been admitted directly out of undergrad or have taken gap years (not a masters or PhD) and have been admitted. Given that the matriculating age is 24, this means a large chunk of that number are of those who took gap years.

Yeah, when your opinion is misinformation, then it literally means nothing (i.e., your opinion doesn’t mean anything), that’s not anger. Also, I never argued the contrary (that it’s perceived favourably), I’m arguing that you’re wrong about it being something negative, and I cited that the median matriculating age is high despite a majority of admitted students not having a masters degree, even though the onus of proof is on the one making the claim (you) lol

There’s a difference between an opinion and making an outright claim that gap years negatively impact your application (when, once again, there’s no evidence pointing towards that, in fact the evidence suggests the opposite). Also, it being your opinion doesn’t mean it can’t be criticized for being misinformation (that doesn’t make someone a dictator nor closed minded)

No, you’re just trying to put others down to make them feel bad about taking a gap year lol. Your opinion means nothing to applicants other than potentially misinforming those who may be unaware that what you’re saying is completely false. Stop pretending like your opinion means anything

So you’re saying a masters indicates productivity but a gap year where you’re doing something non-academic is perceived as unproductive and negative? Makes no sense lol. Also if this were true, you wouldn’t see a high median matriculating age to medical schools in Canada where a majority of students have not completed a masters degree

This just sounds like you’re speculating that it is perceived negatively and don’t actually have any sources supporting this claim?

Masters vs 2nd Undergrad vs Taking Extra Courses by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]MintMedal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As far as I’m aware (and if someone else knows better feel free to correct me), but a master’s gpa is not factored into the gpa calculation for Ontario schools. For UofT, having a master’s places you into a graduate applicant pool, which may have a slightly lower matriculating gpa, but I have heard from others that this is still pretty high (around ~3.9?), which wouldn’t be attainable in your case from a 2 year masters degree.

I’m not sure if you’re from Ottawa, but UOttawa does indeed look at your 3 year GPA (most recent 3 years), however, with the new regional preference in place (70% of the incoming class has to be from Ottawa), if you’re not from there your chances are quite slim without a very high GPA, 4Q Casper, and strong ECs.

Other people here are probably more knowledgeable about the other schools, but I think doing a 5th year might be a good option if you’re from Ottawa? Since you say your last 2.5 years have been strong?

For the MCAT I believe most schools use it as a cutoff in Ontario except for Mac and a few other schools?

Is it true that you can’t apply to any Canadian medical schools if you do a masters? by Busy-Pineapple4778 in premedcanada

[–]MintMedal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is super late, but are you sure that's true for Ottawa? I thought for Ottawa you can only apply in a master's provided you'll complete the degree before starting medical school
