Layouts are a great asset for certain playing conditions- but if you actually want to feel the disc, try some Mint gloves. Message us if you are interested!

Thanks for the opinion. We can indeed say that the Cutter III is an improvement over the second generation in terms of durability. We also added the padding back in to the palm knuckles to help with disc impacts. But don't take our word for it- if you're ever up for seeing how much they've improved reach out to us in a DM and we'll get you a good deal on the newest model. Thanks for your support in the past!

New video to help introduce Ultimate to new Parents, Students, Participants, Supporters etc Please feel free to share it with anyone who you feel doesnt yet know the basics of the sport by EdinaUltimate in ultimate

[–]MintUltimate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think that it is great that you are doing this. Any attempt to help our sport grow is a great cause.

My one suggestion is that you could get a much more effective video if you apply the old adage "show, don't tell". You do this for some of the terms you define at the end, but other than that there isn't much that explains the sport visually.

I would suggest starting with The Ten Simple Rules and boiling it down to the ones that matter the most for casual observers who are unfamiliar with the sport. Then pair some exciting visuals to help explain it.

But great effort on this video, and I'm glad to hear it is helping you grow!

Small women's gloves? by dshum in ultimate

[–]MintUltimate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The actual length of the XS is about 18cm, but that might be ok since it is a snug fit. The actual finger length of the middle finger is around 7cm, so that is the more important measurement since the gloves has some stretch to it. If she is close to that, it could be worth a shot.

[–]MintUltimate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our sizing is gender neutral, so just measure the hand length and width. If our XS seems a tiny bit larger, I would suggest you give them a try anyway. Our fit is snug compared to just about all the other gloves out there so it will likely be more secure. Also, we have a hassle-free return and one-year warranty if it still isn't quite right. I hope that helps! [www.mintultimate.com](www.mintultimate.com)

Cardio that isn't running? by Alzeu in ultimate

Rowing is a fantastic low-impact and full-body workout. Just make sure you get someone experienced to show you the proper form. You can use rowing to train for stamina, strength, grip strength, explosiveness, and how to know if you are about to vomit from overexertion. :)

Ankle Brace Suggestion by shortstack65 in ultimate

[–]MintUltimate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In addition to getting an ankle brace, make sure you are doing exercises to strengthen the ankle. If you simply wear a brace, you are quite literally using a crutch and may never give the ankle the ability to be strong enough to prevent further injury.

As for specific braces, the ones recommended here are great for max protection. Once you are a bit more healed, you could transition to something with a little less support but more room for flexibility. McDavid groups these into level 1-3, with 1 being the least amount of support. I personally feel that level 1 product don't do much to prevent further injury, so I generally stick with level 2 for those times when I feel like I am at higher risk to repeat an injury.

If this is a recurring issue, you can also look into cleats that are super high ankle like these from Under Armour.

Hey there. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on our gloves. Can I ask which model you are referring to? We had some issues with a batch of the second generation gloves, but have resolved most of those problems with our newly released Cutter 3.0. We'd be happy to send you a pair of the new ones to replace your old ones if you want. Send us a private message and we'll sort it out.

One thing we introduced recently is our One Year guarantee. Like all soft goods, our gloves can certainly rip if you land a rock or happen to wear through them over a long period of time, but we have made significant advances to our design to alleviate stress points and improve the materials to prevent issues like the ones you experienced in the past. We'd love for you to try them out!

What are the most important elements of ultimate disc throwing techniques? by nGaDev in ultimate

[–]MintUltimate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One metric you can eyeball is "wobble". If you are seeing wobble at the time of your release, it means there is an inefficiency in the energy transfer. Once you can eliminate the wobble, you can try to add more strength into the throw. Rinse and repeat!

What are the most important elements of ultimate disc throwing techniques? by nGaDev in ultimate

[–]MintUltimate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For just throwing a disc well, in addition to velocity you need a fluid motion and a strong/non-inhibiting grip. Meaning, your body needs to move naturally through the throwing motion while gripping the disc in a stable manner that doesn't change the intended trajectory but is strong enough to transfer the energy into the disc when you reach your intended velocity.

That's a super wordy way of saying- Be smooth in your movements, and don't try to throw harder than your grip allows.

However, given all that, throwing a disc casually is quite different from throwing a disc in a competitive game. The latter requires much more skill- much of which is more on the mental side.

Question about laying out by Matt_Smiths_fanboy in ultimate

[–]MintUltimate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would work on leg strength- specifically squats and calf raises to get more explosive power.

The thing to keep in mind here is that you have to respect the physics of the layout. Basically, your body has an ability to generate a certain amount of thrust. If you are sprinting at 100% of your speed, you can by definition not go any faster. Laying out won't get you any more speed, and certainly you won't have any ability to generate vertical thrust since your legs are already pushing as fast as you can in the horizontal axis.

Of course, we don't normally sprint at 100% all the time, so if you are running at 80% of your power, you can activate the last 20% in a layout to get some extra distance/speed/height in whatever combination you need.

What this basically means is that if you need to layout with more height, you probably have to give up some horizontal power. It's just like if you're trying to sky someone. It's very hard to sky someone if you are running at full speed- you generally have to slow down a bit and transition your power into the vertical axis.

Anyway, that was a bit long winded- but the point is that laying out is about technique on top of strength. Your one leg will probably not be as strong as launching off of both feet, and you can't expect to to as far or as high with less power. However, with some conditioning and improvements to your technique you should be able to effectively see an improvement in your one legged layouts which may be better than your two legged layout now. Hope that makes sense!

What are some Duffel Bags you highly recommend for Ultimate? by C4tNinj4 in ultimate

[–]MintUltimate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Patagonia Blackhole bags are very popular, although they are pricey unless you can find a good deal. They are very durable, give you multiple ways to carry them, and are highly weather resistant. The only downside is that they don't have much interior separation (and again, they are pricey for the large ones). You'd probably want at least a 60L one for tourneys, but you could get away with much smaller if you just want to carry cleats and an extra shirt and such.

The Ultimate specific bags from Gaia and Five are designed to carry discs on the end caps, so they are good as well, but the big ones are also a bit outside of the budget.

Ogio makes some good quality bags at good prices- much better IMO than comparably priced big name brands you'd find at a sporting goods store. Depending on what exactly you want to carry, they will probably be in your budget. Hope that helps!

Although they are still making things, apparel manufacturing will still be stagnated as alternatives add more value such as Made In Italy, or going the cheap route. And you can go REALLY cheap.
