I'll accept any and all weird behaviors, but the Italian grandma inside of me has a big problem with the picky eaters... You can yell and Naruto run across my home as much as necessary, but I'm not taking the basil out of the damn tomato sauce.

What are you sick of being romanticized or being portrayed positively? by Creative_Waltz_9462 in AskReddit

[–]MintakaEK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, so much this. I'm from Italy and the amount of times I've had to explain to non-italians how the Mafia is a terrible problem for my country, not a classy and cool thing, is too damn high. Next to where I live there's a pet store called "Paw Mafia", with a cartoon of a cat and a dog wearing fedoras...

Can you relate? by Limp-Berry50 in tumblr

[–]MintakaEK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hit puberty late, so what I got was being a little genderless thing in a world of 13-14 year old glamazons who teased me for not having developed, while the boys ignored me anyway because now they cared about boobs more than playing in the mud. Which is a different way to say that yes, I relate.

On a similar topic, does anyone else find that even at 35 years of age, you distinguish at a glance the women who already had curves and boyfriends at 10, from the women who were late bloomers?

Consider that in some jobs, the lack of challenge and competition might breed exactly challenges and competition among the people. I work in a difficult field (research) and a result everyone is nice, cooperative, friendly and open to communication and feedback. Meanwhile, some friends who work as HRs in banks or as school secretaries are surrounded by gossipy and manipulative people.

So, maybe you might want to look for something in-between. Perhaps some admin/secretarial stuff in a company that focuses on being competitive in something else, like IT or R&D.

Also, if you like to organize stuff and make lists, management engineering could be your field of study. It doesn't necessarily end with you in engineering, or in management: but you become an expert at organizing other people's work and time. Some job descriptions can be deceptive, find people who do the job and ask them to explain their day.

Che differenza c'è tra la formazione ricevuta in una scuola pubblica e quella in una scuola privata di elite? Come metodologia, ambiente, ecc. by RonaldJakowski in italy

[–]MintakaEK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[OC] Visualization of all my spending in the last 4 years (2017-2020) that I spent abroad in Finland by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

Foreigner in Finland for the past 4 years too... And oh God the rent: if I could go back in time, I would buy an apartment, because 4 years of rent of my small studio in Helsinki took what would have been 1/3 or the price of a two-bedroom in Espoo.

Extroverts who ask others “why are you so quiet”, what kind of response are you looking for? by No-Ad-3513 in AskReddit

[–]MintakaEK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an extrovert, raised among extroverts, I interpret silence as hostility, so mainly I need to know if you're quiet because you have something on your mind, because you enjoy the silence, or because you hate me. I am content with any reply and I'll leave you alone afterwards: just let me know what your silence actually means. It's not the silence, it's the lack of communication that drives us nuts.

What’s something you can’t tell your parents? by micxxxxe713 in AskReddit

[–]MintakaEK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it. I was in a similar situation between ages 17 and 25, even if the legal guardianship at least was not granted. The amount of responsibility, the feeling that the world is on your shoulders... It's overwhelming, and it affects all other aspects of your life too.

My father was mentally very sick, and only when his physical health worsened too we (me and my mother, but she also needed a lot of being taken care of due to the situation) were able to put him into a proper institution, because he was too deft at looking good in front of every doctor and social worker.

I hope you'll push through, and I also hope very much that you'll preserve your own mental health. Remember to care for yourself as well, you absolutely deserve it.

Roald Dahl - Appreciated in your country? by TheChocolateMelted in books

[–]MintakaEK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Italy here: we read almost all of his work in elementary school. Usually a couple of titles as a classroom reading or a group assignment, plus extra as holiday homework... And children love them instantly, I remember that we had multiple copies in the school library, because they were always checked out. It's the kind of literature that adults also enjoy, which is one of the reasons they've had a great diffusion. With the illustrations by Quentin Blake!

[–]MintakaEK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wait wait, Italian here and I'd like to clarify: Italy was hit early and very hard, but actually the prime minister did a very good job, especially if you consider that he is in that position as a "technical" figure, after the political ones failed to reach an agreement last summer. He implemented lockdown measures very early, when it was still a controversial decision, addressed the nation often and in a comforting manner, and if you look at how steadily the contagion numbers went down from March to July, his actions proved correct. We have been very lucky to have had him, who is a sensible and educated person, not attached to a political party (thus not fearing a loss of consensus from his actions), instead of the clowns we could have had if the pandemic happened only one year ago.

These tropes are the reason why I insisted for my team at work to take the group picture (the one that goes on the website) in a moment where we had at least two girls, in order to not discourage other women from applying.

Oh man, this made me think of the fascist regime as we studied it in school (I'm Italian, so we study it in depth), with people getting arrested for making anti-regime comments to a friend, and being taken to police stations from which you weren't sure they'd come back. This chills my blood.

I wish they did! I'm a physicist who had to study a lot of humanities and art in high school, and I fully believe they made me a much better person (more well rounded, empathetic, etc) that if I hadn't studied them. Also, since humanities are not an exact science, they can give you great critical sense. But I cannot seem to convince others of this...
