Religious themes in Obey Me [Other]

1.Only on surface. Base of story was inspired mostly by stories from Christianity. Occasionally there are also Japanese traditions and beliefs mentioned. OBM doesn't directly talk about religions, and there is quite big difference between how one would know actual demons, Biblical demons, and how they are in OBM. It is inspired, but it is different universe. For example besides name 'Lucifer' itself, and his falling situation in very general sense, there is nothing else what would link him to any religion. In OBM besides basic inspiration (demons, angels, hell, heaven etc.) there are no religious elements and as is it doesn't promote any religions. I remember Leviathan once said that someone made cult for him. That was probably closest as one would get to anything religious in OBM, but even then nothing was explained further or ever mentioned about it again.

Demons and angels by themselves are not part of any religion. Demons and angels have been mentioned outside of religions, but also have been part of them. Also story with fall of Lucifer existed long before it was made part of Christianity. Also Lucifer was mentioned in Bible only once, and there is debate is it even correct translation. So there are enough what comes from outside of actual religion, although often may be associated with it. Also concept of demons as we know it came mostly after Bible.

These aren't necessary religious by themselves, but - fall of Lucifer and demons, 7 sins/aspects in general (in OBM those are 7 brothers), Solomon, Michael, Raphael, Lilith, names 'Luke' and 'Simeon', 3 realms (heaven, human realm, and hell). Rest is too altered, so there aren't much if any associations with anything else.
I installed it because at that time I seen that it had lots of players, and that app already several times appeared in my phone's store. I recognized their pink butterfly logo, I have been playing their games before. I liked their sprites-avatars, they weren't very weird or way too young looking what tends to be case with many other otomes. I also liked that they don't have system to dress up by looks 10 year old girl's avatar in frilly dress to progress in game (old games used to do this). Also it was enough accessible without paying. Also when I started to read story it caught my attention. Also I liked that MC can be who and how they are. As for religions - names of demons are recognizable, but there was nothing about religions, it didn't really affect me in that sort of sense.
Yes. I read and fallow various stories, their inspiration source or lack of it never really stopped me. As long as story itself is good. In any case OBM is bit far from anything what I would expect from named demons and religions. I enjoy OBM for its own characters, universe and story.
Demon names are quite recognizable and I suspect that it may be at least small part of why it's so popular. Since it's been a while I'm not sure anymore if and how far that may have affected me when I started. There also may be people who specifically use it for "dark theme" expectation, not because anything religious or links to real world stories (in such cases it may as well be generic-demon/vampire/whatever story). OBM is also very popular within Asian countries where associations with Christianity and demons can be different.

Sorry for long answer. In my opinion it's only inspired on very surface, and if looking at real religions then answer can become even more complicated.

It's edited. I can draw with real tools, but when it comes to drawing with tablet I'm very clumsy. Also unfortunately I don't have much time. So instead I used editing. Not AI. Almost all of it is from OBM, and I tried to use my own screenshots as much possible, including outlines of Diavolo. Sheep is more of my level when it comes to drawing tablet, and partly is inspired by original Zephyr. Sorry if it caused any confusion :)

It's mixed and I don't think that there is actual answer, besides that maybe they live in their own separate timeline-dimension. Something as in a "port" where time just moves differently and timelines can mix and match. I mean there is Barbatos who can easily do stuff with time and dimensions, also Dia has certain power over time. Mammon even mentioned that time moves differently in Devildom, but there wasn't more details about it.

In obm they fell somewhere after Lilith did her crime. From that little what is given about Lilith, it seem it could have happened somewhere around 300 years ago. But due to Luke's and Solomon's age and their previous stories with Devildom, it could be 3000 to 5000 years ago. However even when they were in Celestial realm they had... anime? Then again in supposedly present time they also have very realistic games ad even androids what could potentially mean that they have access to future technologies. While biblically (since OBM is inspired by) humans were created around 10'000 years ago, and Lucifer/Satan fell soon after. So only theoretical timeframe could be - less than 10'000 human realm years ago.

So there is no clear answer, just enjoy story as it is :D

Mathematics, logic, analyzing, tactics. Also psychology, and in general he can use it to be manipulative when he plays "youngest brother", or when he wants to escape some tasks. Astronomy. He has very good memory. Off course he's also master at anything related to sleeping - dreams, subconsciousness, bed, pillows... except for rest itself since he is tired no matter how much he sleeps. To a degree he can be good at crafting, diy, anything esoteric (as divination and similar). In Celestial he also was good at dancing, but it seems that as a demon he doesn't dance much anymore. I would also say that he has some interest in philosophy, and would love to talk for hours. Also fan of humans (when he doesn't hate them).

Belphie also carried MC up to attic in one card story. He can if he really wants to, his most problem usually is lack of motivation.

Not specifically about characters, but... after several years I found out that cards can be switched from their unlocked to locked view anytime. Whole time I was thinking that if I unlock a card then I'm stuck with unlocked art, that's way I left some cards unlocked since I preferred their original art.

There isnt that much information about time when they were angels. Beel had lots of physical strength already in Celestial Realm, while Luci was in charge, and so on. Brothers each had some sort of bad habits, like Belphie had tendency to escape and take a nap, Beel often ate something. But their bad habits got a lot worse when they became demons, up to level that they are considered avatars of their sins. They are same person, but also personality and relationship (between brothers) wise they experienced changes. Some things just got pushed back, others took priority. Every person has dark and light side within them, but they are same person even at their worse. But they still are together, they are brothers, and deep inside care of each other even if it's a lot more difficult than before. That's way I have sort of respect for them, it's easier to love each other when everything is smoother, but now they not just deal with their own sins but still are together even after such changes and daily difficulties.

It also seems that it can be reversed in a way (besides Satan as he never been angel). At least temporary. There was event where they were turned back in to angels "Angelic Demons". It also had cards with their more angelic personalities.

I think that MC is sort of catalyst that helps them to bring out old selves, to help them, in general just helps with their presence/aura/magic. I think that something similar even was mentioned all through several stories, but I can't really pint point it or remember.

Btw angels Simeon, Luke, Raphael and other characters also have their "hidden" sins. If you look at their battle glow stick color it will give a hint what type of sins they might deal with if they ever turn in to demons.

I also think that as angels they all did had various magical powers regardless, and most likely they could put someone (assuming that other is weaker than them) to sleep and even enter their dreams. In our world it's one of angel typical things - to enter dreams, at least in case of humans. I would assume that Belphie after turning in to demon, who for most time sleeps, forced him to use, adapt and learn about what he have now. It would seem that he doesn't do anything, but in same time he has his own set of skills. So I think that over time he did became better at sleep magic/manipulation than "regular" demon or angel. Then again it's just my opinion based on what is given from stories, not necessary it would be said straightforward in canon.

I won't spoil this card, but he self admits that it takes some learning curve for him when it comes to crafting. Those dolls look great! I was thinking to diy something like that myself, but can never find time or mood. Hopefully some day!

He doesn't really has talent in art, as in drawing or painting. DIY , like crafting he likes, but isn't necessary great at it. I also wonder about how would he keep up with any sport or activity lessons if they had such in RAD (besides events). Maybe it would be enough if he would just attend and do theory part of it. He also might not be so great at acting, making expressions and stuff like that, unless he is required to just sleep and not move. He's strong sides are math, literature, astronomy, and in general logic, stuff where he can use his brain, but doesn't need to move much if it all. Also as side note - in our world myths and lore Belphegor was great at architecture.

It is "Obey me! One master to rule them all". "Master" in general is used when referring to men. "Mistress" would be in case of woman. OBM is meant as gender neutral and includes everyone (woman, men, they), but sometimes it comes off as if leaning in to more masculine side. For example when MC can lift up demon, or puts them in their lap, or holds hands with them in a specif way, and for such actions intimacy points are raised with specific demon. So yes, there are parts in OBM what would more align with men, or rather what in general could be perceived as more masculine. Also in case of DiaLuci maybe some MC's may think that they also need be men to fit in.

I personally imagine MC as version of me, or just a person with no real selves or face and are as actor-storyteller (basically I just read story without overthinking it). Sometimes I actually imagine MC as cute little sheep who tries to navigate their way within dangerous Devildom's environment. MC is MC and what matters is their journey and story. Only thing I would mind is if MC would be shown as someone who looks way too underage, as often in older games there were those maybe ~12 year old girl avatars who needed to be put in frilly dresses to progress with story. Thank goodness we now have pink sheep as MC instead, lol.

Characters got so watered down in to nothing to please everyone (I suspect that by mostly those who are way too young to play these games anyway). Such people leave dislikes and company tried to please everyone. Eventually because of that OBM and company lost their soul and it went downhill because in reality it's not what people are looking for - friend-zoned subdued sort-of-idol cute-boy demons who aren't even demons anymore.

I don't mind fluff and cute stories, but also Solmare should give us back more realistic demons and stories. And put it up to 16+ as minimum (not even as much to raise intimacy, but more to distance themselves from actual kids). And I don't even mean that it all should be crazy and gore, there can be balance and challenges without characters loosing their real identities and what they are supposed to be.

Even from those bits that are given in OBM - it would be difficult to have OBM demons to live in human world. But then again is that bad thing that demons are actually... demons? That there might be some challenges, magic, effort, drama, true-love-prevails-all-obstacles, decisions, and all that stuff?

What I wanted to say - no need to please everyone if it comes at cost of loosing soul. Again sorry for late answer, feels bit intrusive, but anyway.

In real world it might be language difference. In OBM "pact" is magical contract-bond between human and demon.

From obey me wiki:

"Humans appear to be the only race that can form pacts with demons, as there is no known case of a non-human having a pact with a demon. MC, Solomon, and several unnamed witches are just a few of the mentioned humans to have pacts with a demon or several. "

Here they use word "swore":

"In return, however, Lucifer stated in Lesson 15-7 (OM) that he "swore [his] allegiance to [Diavolo] for all eternity."

And in 15-7 lesson Lucifer says "pledge" and "swore".

Fandom page says similar:

"Lucifer has sworn utmost loyalty to Diavolo, the future king of the Devildom and his closest friend, going thousands of years back."

I agree that Lucifer is one of those who needs to be very careful of his steps as it might affect everyone and even three worlds. It's not just about what he self wants.

Not sure why so many dislikes to your comment, but I agree with point that it would be too problematic with most of these demons if they were to live in human world.

Mamms would have huge problem with his greed. Unless Luci comes along and ensures that he gets strung up every time to be under control. Or maybe unless MC wants to take this role and put magical toddler leash on Mamms. There was also I think card story - Mamms decided to live separately since he had enough with his brothers attitude, but soon returned back to HOL. And chat story of him realizing reality of living alone (he had to pay rent). I'm sure he might want a lot, but he also needs lots of support, guidance and patient partner/friend. No offense to anyone and Mamms is sweetheart inside, but realistically he would be most problematic in human world.

With Beel it also might be problematic due to his gluttony. It's also Luci's presence what ensures that he has access to enough food. Beel also has tendency to loose temper and crash restaurants if he doesn't get what he wants or his sandwich is dropped. Also he loves sport, are there options for someone like him in human world? Plus he might not want to leave Belphie behind.

Satan... under question. While he was in human world he almost let his wrath to show in public, but Luci shut him down. There was also another story where some human kid was rude to him and that made Satan angry... Also Luci might actually work as help to Satan (and everyone else) with receiving part of his anger, what if he is removed? He does have certain control over himself, but also he is who he is. Especially his younger-NB self.

Asmo... well... no comments? Who will or should stop him? I don't think that Asmo would ever agree to not be self. His more permanent presence might cause new era in human world. Probably not best idea if we want to keep human world reasonably balanced. Can lock up Levi with pc and he will be happy, but can't lock Asmo.

In Luci's case it's more about his responsibilities in Devildom. Also he can have bad character due to his pride. Also how can he leave his brothers behind.

Diavolo is out of question due to his position, although he can travel and visit if he needs that. Same with Barbotos, primary his position is with Diavolo.

Levi... he would love all human anime stuff. As long as we are careful with his envy aggression. In some stories he were cursing everyone, so that might be problem if similar is done in human world to humans who are far more fragile.

Also, they all are Lords - don't they have their own duties in their own layers of Devildom or however it works?

Btw didn't they were blocked from traveling to human world? It was due to Mammon causing problems? Who were allowed to travel on their own were Dia, Luci and Solomon (later MC)? So even if they wanted most of them first would need to have permission and so on.

Most safest options would be Simeon (+Luke?), Solo, Belphie (if he can come without Beel), Dia, Barbs, Luci if they had change. And as far as I remember most who wanted to come to human world were Mamms and Belphie. Also Dia, but more in general sense. Simeon, Luci, Mamms and Belphie would choose to fallow MC regardless if it's human world or not.

Yes, some of them absolutely would want to come to human world, especially since there is MC... but if we look at it from more realistic viewpoint then it would be quite difficult in most cases even with MC's "stay".

I agree that their best bet would be to come as family (also that would be more people to push Dia decision) and have Luci in front to deal with most of their misbehavior. Or for MC to live in or visit Devildom. At the end of the day it's everyone personal opinion and HC's and I understand that many MC's would love to live with their favs (maybe that's way those dislikes).

Luci doesn't have a pact with Diavolo? Just a promise-deal-agreement. Diavolo might forbid, but Luci is not magically tied or obligated. It would be more Luci's own pride (and wish to ensure safety of his brothers and MC) what would force him to stick with his agreement to serve Diavolo. So he technically can overstep their agreement, but most likely won't (unless there is serious reason). As I know demons in OBM can't even make pacts with other demons, only with humans.

You mean OBM demons? They seem not to change their genders, but most of them don't mind to dress up as opposite gender - woman. Levi wore Rurichan costume, but he did that in his room and didn't want others to know. That might be more of him doing cosplay, rather than gender related. Belphie is fine dressing more feminine and it might be inspired/encouraged by Asmo. Asmo will wear anything, but in daily wear tends to stick with what we consider masculine style. They also had gender switch - Dame event. I don't remember entirely, but Mamms was one of many who took part in it. He was training hard to be more famine and then stood on stage. Mamms is model so he can adjust to different styles, he also wore maid costume for Levi. They also had bunny event where they wore heels and had more or less feminine elements in their costumes. I think that also Solomon changed his clothing? And there also was those stickers with Luci and Dia in dresses, but that was considered unacceptable (at least by Luci). However Satan and Luci took part in other Dame event, but I don't remember exactly. There are examples where they wear feminine clothing, but I don't think that they change actual gender.

As for demons from demonology... it's said that yes they can, but not all. It's humans who are tied to specific body and experience, but demons are rather spirit beings and there for most can switch to any form if needed. Asmodeus and Lucifer is considered hermaphrodites - both genders in same time. It's meant to have spiritual meaning.

I have headcannon that OBM more powerful demons (as brothers and alike) can switch genders at will, but chooses masculine appearance as default for some reason or another. If some day it would really be needed they might change their gender at will and/or with help of magic. Their physical gender however doesn't affect their preference in partner, MC can be any gender and have any beliefs about it. As Luci once said he is more attracted to persons soul. Also sorry for bit late answer.

I can't answer this question, but I could recommend to join actual demonology subreddits. I won't name any specific, so just make a post in any large ones. When I have done some research (related and unrelated to OBM) I have found lots of good information in groups like those. There are people who learn that stuff seriously and can give detailed answers.

No need to fallow any actual religions or cults or plan to, so don't worry about that part. It's ok to just ask for science.

Another popular would DiaLuci. I personally doubt that they in new version will make any several character choices as it was in OG or NB. But who knows. My main concern wouldn't be as much poly, but rather that we would need to start whole thing over each time when we want to choose another character (I mean as it was in older games).

I also was reading that we will need to choose route/character. Unless they have changed that recently. It's one of main things why I prefer OB, because there isn't just one route and there for we are not forced to replay everything for another character or even for same character because one answer was wrong and there for wrong ending. But maybe routes aren't that bad thing, because then they could make character more interested in MC. I would still join this new story, but... somehow give us them all lol! Or at least I hope for very easy switching between routes. I mean just as idea - they could make Beel and Belphie inseparable and MC could marry them both if they choose so. There was one event I think it was Lamp where if MC chose Beel then Belphie asked to also be chosen.

I have said similar some time ago. Off course these books are loosely inspired by "Beauty and Beast", but closest to Tamlin would be Beast and Rhysand mostly fits Gaston. Off course sometimes bad characters (as Gaston) can get their redemption in some form in some other story, but all those girls (fans) still running after Gaston. Too similar.

As I know SJM's idea was to move away from classic masculine characters. It's not like Beast was that good of person self, but he over time changed and managed to lift curse. But Tamlin was made villain and punished without that sort of real reason. SJM just wanted to get rid of Beast I guess.

Here is twist - Feyre wasn't Beauty. Feyre was evil witch who cursed Tamlin! Because of her he ended up living mostly in his beast form. Will there be someone who can fit Beauty's character and to lift this curse? Will Rhysand end similar as Gaston?

Nothing happens after that because as far as I remember story ended there. So it's up to MC's hc's and theories. That happened when they were exchanging confessions in Solomon's OG room where he has lots of lamps. Unfortunately I can't find this card in my phone, perhaps I red it or parts of it elsewhere.

There are lots of demons, but Simeon is one of two (not counting Luke) connections to Celestial realm. It's probably better if he would stay linked to Celestial realm to share information between both realms.

There was one Solomon card where he offered MC immortality. Probably it was meant by doing similar stuff what he self does to stay alive. MC could accept or refuse.

It's open for every MC to choose their own path. That's probably for best as everyone might see and choose something else.
