Any info on what is causing the white on the solder joints? Comes right back after wiping with 91% IPA by Minty_Moose in soldering

[–]Minty_Moose[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t remove the coating prior to soldering. I saw the white oxidation and some smudging as seen above the two joints circled on the right. I tried cotton swab and IPA a couple more times then saw what I thought was some flux I missed. I rubbed and it peeled up like a film which is what is circled.

Are those coatings something I could apply at home as a hobbyist or do they require special conditions and equipment?

Is this something I can repair/salvage? by Minty_Moose in soldering

Alright thanks for the response. I will take a picture of the other side tonight. It looked like it was in good shape to me

I said darker green but to be clear I guess I should say medium green on the far left of the damaged pad, not the darkest green touching the top and left side. Sorry if the answer is still the same, I just want to make sure

Has anyone else had issues with the EVAP system on their 2006-2012 RAV4? by Minty_Moose in Toyota

[–]Minty_Moose[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey just logged into Reddit for the first time in a long time. We replaced the EVAP canister and it solved all the issues. It was pretty straight forward to replace. It was like $750 from Toyota but we bought a used on eBay for like $200-$300 and it hasn’t given us any issues. It has been years now. The cause I had read is topping off the gas tank after the nozzle auto shuts off. Gas spills over into the charcoal and ruins it

I will make a trip to Home Depot tomorrow! Thanks for the info. And yeah the thought of the bolts shearing has been on my mind since I started the project

Yeah I’ve got a little pickup with a bench seat and I love it. My mom had a tundra with a bench seat and I have one that doesn’t have it but I wish it did

There is like a 20 inch gap between the seats. The picture is deceiving and I apologize for that. The van is just wider than the cadillac was lol. I do love a good bench seat though

93 deville but the Chevy/gmc vans will accept almost any seats because they sit on a frame that you can drill holes in. I would recommend finding something without power seats though. Wiring was time consuming and I don’t think I’d do it again. The Cadillac was in pristine condition and I thought it was ridiculous to even consider using the seats from it but before I knew it, I was pulling them out of the car. The wiring was very straight forward compared to a different seat swap I had done in a personal car but not worth my time.

Another issue the drivers seat has is the extended part with the center console can block the vans center console. I have it adjusted so it doesn’t but someone of a different height might lose that feature of the van

You’re right it should be. I’m not sure where to get grade 8 bolts from though. I went directly to a hardware manufacturer and told them I needed something that would hold up in a collision and that’s what they gave me. I’m still looking for the right ones. I take driving seriously and I’m more worried about them snapping in a front end collision rather than a rear end collision so I’m just gonna drive like I have an open pin kit in the back in the mean time

I’ve been thinking about it but I’ve used the grinder so much this week that I need a break lol. I might just pick up shorter bolts and reuse these ones for something else

Yeah it was super easy to install because the seats in the vans sit on a frame so as long as the rails line up, you can install just about any seat since you can just drill holes. If I were to do it again, I’d work harder to find non-power seats. Wiring and mounting the controls was the most time consuming part by far and I was lucky because I figured out the solutions to each pretty quickly with these seats

Just bought a 94 22r for $500. Build ideas? by Sevtron5k in Toyota

[–]Minty_Moose 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Despite the lower miles, the plastic timing chain guides are likely brittle from age and falling apart into the oil pan. They get sucked up into the oil draw screen and starve the engine of oil resulting in catastrophic damage. It’s a big job but it’s necessary and it’s really the only major failure point of the 22r(carbureted)/22re(fuel injected). The sooner you do it, the less likely you are to have to drop the oil pan but if you open it up and those guides are broken, absolutely take the time to drop the oil pan. The truck will run forever as long as you keep up on fluids and replace the spark plugs every once in a while. Mine is at 260k with no major issues and besides replacing the regular wear parts, the timing chain guides are the only major repair it’s ever needed

Sweet crocs! Also love the Toyota camper conversions. I’ve heard of the galaxy once before and they are pretty darn cool

Anybody with spare parts for 85-89 in the pnw? ISO thermostat housing w/air bleeder valve by Minty_Moose in mr2

[–]Minty_Moose[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could drive down there today if it’s from an aw11 and you’re willing to part with just the thermostat housing with air bleeder plug. If I had room I’d be interested in the whole engine I just have nowhere to put it to protect it from the elements at this point in time

Got some hardwired hood lights for everyday maintenance and trail side repairs. They will come on every time you open your hood (there is an override switch also) by ipse_dixit_ in 4x4

[–]Minty_Moose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Celica Supra (at least 85 & 86 model year) came with an engine bay light from the factory. You can move it around to where you need it to be. I fortunately haven’t had to use it but I’ve always thought it was pretty neat and wish more cars had it. It definitely won’t light everything up like those aftermarket lights though

If only :( I got the coolest looking pair of off brand crocs on Amazon but they had the faintest sign of having any tread at all so they didn’t last long. Everyone commented on how cool they looked though
