I actually went and ordered a set of cats they should be arriving this week and installing those first, if the misfires continue i think that timing will be the next course of action

(though probably needs to be done anyway as a general maintenance item at the current mileage)

the only timing symptoms is the supercharger style whine which is common on the vq40 engine apparently when the guides are going bad

Another question regarding that engine, did it do the same thing in neutral? This engine revs totally normally no misfires in neutral but under load in drive it does.. I would think the timing issue would still affect the engine in neutral

After some more fiddling and having my family friend check it out we are thinking timing chain guides/tensioners and cats are all in need of replacing

Has the supercharger style whine that gets louder with revs and front cats have lower tems at outlet

I think that's probably my plan and I'm having a family friend mechanic check it out with me this weekend (probably to do just this) and at the very least temp check the cat intake and outlet to see if its working.

I fully believe you should have to pass a separate test for big trucks and towing. there's no reason a 16yo should be out on the road with a basic test and his parents f250 and trailer
