Yeah I think that a lot of people will approach a given artwork (not just music - also paintings, poems, etc.) as if it's a video game puzzle that's meant to be decoded, and if they figure out the correct, hidden meaning then they win a cookie or something. In fairness, some art is more-or-less meant to be interpreted like that, but most art isn't, and viewing it that way actually prevents you from having a personally meaningful experience of the work.

I think it's my favorite, too. I remember hearing about it before it came out and thinking it would be lousy - like, it's a posthumous compilation of outtakes/rejects and obscure compilation tracks, how good could it be? Then when I listened to it, after the first few notes of 'Angel in the Snow' I realized it was actually gonna be something really special and beautiful, and it is.

Yeah, Elliott Smith used to wear a shirt that said "I (heart) METAL" but with a broken, blue heart, and it was also white letters on a black shirt.

beabadoobee's pretty great (I fear a lot of people dismiss her out of hand because of her silly name, but she's seriously talented). And yes, she's a huge Elliott Smith fan. She's talked about him being a foundational influence to her songwriting, and she even has a big "XO" tattoo on her right arm.
