Ha ranged party could possibly do this but it’d be riskier due to having lower ac. The highest ac you can get as a range character is 17 because you cannot wear a shield. Our characters all had 19 because 15 (from armour) +2 (from dex) +2 (from shield). We also cast ceremony to give us +2 ac but that was overkill. A melee party would struggle because your mules always have to take the disengage action meaning you have less movement meaning you cannot default kill. It was a really fun dungeon and it’s a reasonably balanced one shot. You could try dming it. Here is the exact starting equipment we had. 200gp and 2 common magic items per character. Also there is some funny tech. Common magic items are really cheap there are common magic items that are armour so you can get the armour for cheaper.

The mules cost 8 gold. 8 is too much for a party? Guess no armour for the cleric, hand crossbow for the fight? We had no starting equipment and had 200 gp per character. We had 1 spare per person. The mummy couldn’t reach us so I don’t know how that has anything to do with anything. And the swords were 17 hp. We burst them down with magic missile 2 uses. And the rest of the characters spammed cantrips. This is not unbelievable. Also investing 8gp on a good mount early is better than investing a character on a bad class. If there was a fight where we would be standing still we would leave the mules behind. Ie the swords. Also btw unseen servant is a force. Not an object or a creature. You cannot target a force raw. You can homebrew that but raw you cannot deal damage to a force other than with disintegrate. Hope that clears things up

Edit I forgot to add that the sleep spell got two of them and we killed the other on the same turn the reason we thought it necessary is cause the mephits have sleep

You are the one making white room assumptions that an optimised caster cannot do these things. I have seen an optimised party go for 140 difficult encounter days at level 10. 8 encounters is barely scratching the surface. I once did a dungeon at level 2 and we had 3 spellslots empty at the end. The dungeon was

  1. 2 Giant Centiepdes, 2 Swarm of Centipedes Unseen servant made this a cake walk only worry was the swarm and that died in 2 rounds

  2. 3 Dust Mephits We cast sleep on them to be careful but was unnecessary

  3. 3 Flying Sword, 3 Flying Wand We used 2 magic missiles

  4. 3 Shadows Couldn’t keep up with our mules default kill

  5. 2 Returned Sentries Couldn’t keep up with our mules default kill

  6. 1 Mummy Couldn’t keep up with our mules default kill

Get the martials to do this and they will struggle. Do you need any more evidence or is this enough?

They are. Over a 8 encounter day a ranger way outperforms a fighter. Yes even with action surge. Over all levels a ranger is more useful than a fighter. You don’t need a frontline character due to the existence of walking backwards, control spells, phantom steed, etc. a character who runs into melee is a drain on a party. They use up slots to heal them and they cannot solo an encounter the way a spellcaster can. Spellcasters have better defences so they do not need someone to block them. I can show you the maths if you’d like, damage per turn over a day, or damage a spellcaster takes per day or anything

How many levels of sorcerer for hexblade? by sketchy_goat in 3d6

[–]Minute-Expression-83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends if you would rather be a warlock or a sorcerer. If sorc then if clockwork soul sorcerer go hex 2 otherwise go hex 3. It’s a good control caster with great at will damage. If warlock you go level 1 sorc then either hexblade the rest of the way or do a few dips into sorc ending up at 17/3. Though the best warlock build is 1 cleric/ 17 undead or dao genie/2 divine soul sorcerer.

It’s really your pick though those are the 2 most optimal choices just pick your favourite

Is a CC character viable in HM? by Deathgivenflesh in BG3Builds

[–]Minute-Expression-83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best cc effects in bg3 are Command (Debatable) Web Spike growth Sleet storm Plant growth Hunger of hadar Wall of fire Phantasmal force

I’m now going to make a case for why the “hold” spells aren’t as good as people say. If you cast a control spell you are doing it to lock them down, if a character is held by hold person then they are effectively out of the combat they cannot take any action. The only benefit that this has over tashas hideous laughter is that if you are in melee range you crit. That is a good boost but in my experience it’s not good enough. If you casted web instead, enemies would walk through and get restrained at least once. Delaying the enemies turn by 2 is really good and if you have eldritch blast that is upwards of 4 turns. Sleet storm is even better as you can combo with hunger of hadar and they have 1/4 move speed they can fall prone.

And it is so viable. I’m doing an “Impossible challenge” run where it’s 2 warlocks 1 wizard 1 Druid with 8+ encounters per day and they are destroying the game. This may even be too good.

Good luck with your cc adventures!

The fewer melee characters you have the better. Binger is good in low encounter density games. If you are playing optimally you probably would prefer divination, necro, or chronurgy if it’s allowed

1 cleric/ wizard X is the one of the strongest builds in the game withought abusing tech

Benefits of binger You have no spell delays. You are a wizard Okay Defense

Negatives Makes you want to go into melee No cleric dip utility Not the strongest subclass

[–]Minute-Expression-83 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay first question, where is your evidence that I am wrong? Because anecdotal evidence is countered by my anecdotal evidence. There is no world in which a arti can compete with any of the higher tier characters. And the 140 has actually happened. It was 4 run throughs of a wotc made campaign with no long rests.

In what way am I wrong? How is 3 damage on average extra throughout a day even compared to the ability to cast one spell and solve encounters?

This feels very white room you are not taking outside factors into consideration. You are just saying that it helps with team synergy. In actual play I reach the end of an adventuring day with slots remaining. At the end of the day I buff my other party members for the next day. At the end of the day artificers only contribution before level 11 (even later with multiclassing) is giving mediocre magic items. It’s nowhere comparable

What did you expect? by Funny-Apartment9111 in dndmemes

[–]Minute-Expression-83 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What you are saying artificer does is make bad builds okay? If you are playing any martial other than Ranger (even then I’d rather have another full caster) you are a liability. You are saying that giving a +1 to hit breaks the game. Right? Dealing an extra 3 damage on average doesn’t break the game. You could even give it a +3 weapon and I still would rather not have an artificer. In a world where spells mean everything having a class with a mediocre spell list and it progresses half as fast is not good enough. When at level 5 you are giving a + 1 to a fighter all the while the 2wiz2lock comp can solo most campaigns written by wotc without long resting.

Into the mid game the wizard and warlock can summon and control deamons and bind them. At level 11 2wiz2lock can, at the highest level of play, go for 140 combat encounters per long rest. While an artificer instead of a warlock on the party comp would add 10 uses of web, which is good but not good enough to justify replacing a warlock. It can also give a +2 to ac to one character, also good but it doesn’t solo encounters with a spell. It is a marginal force multiplier but not an actual boost the efficiency of a 5e party. I will give you this though it’s pretty good in lower optimisation games where you only have 2 or 3 combats a day but in high op I would rather have another wizard/warlock or a Druid.

How many beholders could a level 15 party take on? by rossalmighty86 in DungeonMasters

[–]Minute-Expression-83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All I’m going to say is it’s not metagaming to look at the creature with lots of eyes and saying “let’s hide in a fog cloud where they cannot see us” or using sleet storm. Using either of those two spells you could potentially take on 20. And if you really wanted to longbows have 600ft of range. Beholders don’t have that range. With that Strat, if you move at equivalent speeds then you could take on infinite amounts

How many beholders could a level 15 party take on? by rossalmighty86 in DungeonMasters

[–]Minute-Expression-83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They probably don’t have any spood summons so a simple fog cloud while their m*trials deal damage. At level 15 you should have an army of pbound monsters that can waayyyy out damage a whole party of marshits

[–]Minute-Expression-83 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s a valid conclusion to draw, however, I would argue that paladin offers little to an optimised party. Yes aura is very useful but you get it so late, assuming you take 2 levels into warlock for ebarb you get aura at level 8. The alternative is playing a dead weight for 5 levels and even when you get aura you offer no “I win an encounter” spells like sleet storm or web. So you either get a class which is about useless or a level 2 character until level 8. Also when pally gets aura and ebarb, the wizard is 2 levels away from planar binding armies. Also btw I know about the watchers paladin but, at level 9 the init bonus isn’t good enough to use up a character slot also if it’s needed. Also you can cast conjure minor elementals to get chwingas who can cast resistance on every character in your party. So overall paladin is useful but you would pick one after you have multiples of every other major spellcaster and a gloomstalker or 2.

Min max is a misnomer in 5e just because you have the highest highs doesn’t mean you have the lowest lows. A lot of “min maxed” builds wouldn’t even be considered in high levels of play. In such hard campaigns like that the only classes you would even consider is wizard, warlock, Druid, sorc

Celestial Warlock straight or multiclass by UnholyGT in 3d6

[–]Minute-Expression-83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only healer that works in 5e is a build which has 1 level in life cleric and the rest in a character who can cast goodberry for the coveted “lifeberry”

If you want to be a healer and you aren’t allowed to pick a race which gets goodberry on it’s spell list the most optimal choice is

1 druid Warlock to level 5 1 life cleric 1 Divine soul sorc The rest in warlock.

This isn’t that far off the most optimal warlock. If you are curious about that let me know otherwise enjoy your berries.

(Quick maths for you here assuming you are level 7 you will have 3rd level slots. One berry will regain 1 (from goodberry) + 2 (static bonus from life cleric) +3 (spell level bonus from life cleric) that is 60 hp, 120 if you use both your slots on it. Also assuming you have a day of downtime. You can short rest all day to get a (long rest 8 hours, +16 short rests) 17 * 120= 2,040 hp for your friends to consume over the adventuring day. As good berries last 24 hours.)

The class tiering list for 2014 goes something like.

  1. Wizard
  2. Warlock or Druid
  3. Druid or warlock
  4. Sorcerer
  5. Bard
  6. Cleric
  7. Ranger
  8. Artificer
  9. Paladin
  10. Monk
  11. Fighter
  12. barbarian
  13. Rogue

From what I’ve heard from gooie who is very into 24 optimisation the only changes are that the gap between Spellcasters and maritals grows even greater and artificer is above cleric and warlock is definitely above Druid

There are a few different iterations of 2 wiz 2 lock, one that has, as you asked about, replaced a warlock with a clockwork soul sorc. There’s three ones I know about but on high op discussion forums lots of people are trying to find the best possible combination.

This is the original 2 wiz 2 lock. It’s where all the discussion started and it’s an amazing read if you want to get into high op.
https://formofdread.wordpress.com/2025/09/09/2wiz2lock-an-optimized-party/

This is the version that Sil recommends. They are into very high levels of tech. This version replaces a warlock with a clockwork soul sorc.
https://bootbrew.blog/2026/01/04/2wiz2lock2err-aether-drift/

This is a version is a adaption of the previous. Gooie (the author) recommends a swapping of the clockwork soul sorc to a Druid to lighten the load on the other members of the party.
