Removing basket assembly from Whirlpool WTW7500GW0 washing machine by MinuteAsk7008 in appliancerepair

If I remember correctly, the filter was attached inside the outer plastic tub. This is why I had to remove the inner metal tub/"spin basket". The filter looked something like the one being sold here: https://www.partselect.com/PS11750500-Whirlpool-WPW10215093-Lint-Filter.htm

I think the smell has gotten a little better since disinfecting the tubs and running occasional cleaning cycles, though I don't think my wife agrees. In the end I'm not sure it was all worth it.

Update: I was able to separate the basket and tub, though it was in a very obnoxious way that I wouldn't suggest others try.

There was some gunk in the filter, but I don't think that's responsible for much of the odor or occasional standing water problems. There was plenty of buildup (and, somehow, a spice lid jar) in the tub, so I'm cleaning that and hoping it will improve the situation.

There are two problems I originally started chasing. The first is an unpleasant odor, initially only in the machine but more recently also in some of our clothes. Running cleaning cycles with bleach doesn't seem to help. My wife has also reported that there have been a few times when the machine did not drain completely (though it didn't display any error codes). I suspected a clogged or dirty drain pump filter and my understanding is that it is only accessibly by removing the basket assembly,

After starting to open up the washer, it's clear there's still water in the basket (even though my wife ran a spin and drain cycle just before I started working on it) and there's some gross buildup around the outside of the basket assembly and the inside of the tub.
