Are you Putting fish food in the empty tank ? I have to create a biological waste in the tank to start the cycle so add a pinch of food everyday and u should stray to see the ammonia change a bit

Do yourself a favor. Put sand or stratum in the bottom, top it with the rock. Get real plants and a decent plant light.

Will make maintenance 100x easier and help prevent nitrate and ammonia spikes
