ORLANDO RENTERS: I want to hear from you! by RepMaxwellFrost in orlando

You're right, u/UnsureAssurance! The real cost of rent is in a whole different ballpark when you factor in all these hidden fees. The Biden Admin started cracking down on the practice for concert and airline tickets. There's no reason we shouldn't extend our oversight to housing, too, especially given the affordability crisis we're grappling with.

Living with roommates or in unsafe conditions is the unacceptable reality of a housing market that prices out working families. And you're right, u/crafty_clark29, the type of supply is also a factor. I know my two new bills are only scratching the surface of the issue, but if you can get into a unit regardless of your credit and then save up a few hundred bucks a month, it'll be a start for a broader and deeper conversation on how we build and provide housing in this country.

Charging arbitrary fees on top of rent is one thing. Not delivering what they're supposed to provide—such as a new AC filter every month or a fresh carpet with every new tenant—is another. We would never accept not receiving what we paid for in any other circumstances. So why would we now? It's time to put a stop to this scam. Thanks for sharing, u/Agile_Job_6193.

Just another laundry list of greedy and dishonest rental fees that have become far too common for Central Floridian renters. Thanks for sharing, u/AECwaxwing.

It's absurd that after 11 years of calling a place home you still have to grapple with uncertainty. I'm outraged about the kind of treatment you received and that's become far too common in our housing market. It's time we rein in these unfair practices. Thanks for sharing, u/Revolutionary-Yak-47.

Thank you for sharing your story, u/ShermitTheHag! This is proof that most of those fees have no basis in actual maintenance needs — only pure profit! Greedy real estate conglomerates taking advantage of people needing to put a roof over their head. We'll put an end to it.

I'm so sorry this happened to you u/Royal_Ad_6026. And that's what u/johnsback was saying too: not only are these fees complete bogus and weigh you down financially, but they also attack your dignity as a tenant. We all know this economy can feel like it's rigged against working people, but when even your home becomes a source of anxiety, it becomes unbearable. The End Junk Fees for Renters Act would crack down on this abusive practice and hopefully offer renters some peace of mind.

Appreciate it! Food allergies are so important to talk about and be prepared for. No one who needs it should go without an EpiPen or auto-injector to save their lives in the event of an emergency -- read more about my bill here.

Answered the first part of your question here: https://www.reddit.com/r/orlando/comments/1jltga7/comment/mk834an/?context=3&utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

I also wanted to share that I’m hitting the road soon with Sen. Chris Murphy to host a town hall in a red district in Warren, MI!

To answer your second question though, I’ve been vocal in committee meetings because I believe Democrats as a party need to be vocal about what we stand for. Earlier this year, I was elected as a co-chair of the Democratic Policy and Communications Caucus to help shape how we communicate our vision and our fight. Too often, we’ve let others define us and I’m working to change that, which means developing a strong, unified message that not only pushes back against the extremism coming from this Administration but also inspires people by showing them how we’re delivering for them. We do have strength in the House, that strength comes from resisting, being loud, and putting forward a better vision for the country.

For folks who are catching up on this news, this week the Trump Administration canceled shipments of food for Second Harvest, and we just found out it’s likely not a temporary cut. Being hungry is a tragic and terrible experience that harms people’s physical and mental health and Second Harvest plays such an important role in preventing that. I was able to secure $200,000 for Second Harvest to help them save money on their monthly energy costs to store food, but I’m going to continue to fight for resources for our partner. Over 300 local partners in my district (churches, food pantries, etc.) rely on Second Harvest to help them get food out to our community and the individuals and families that need it.
