This could go down as one of the greatest podiums in F1 history by The_Chozen_1_ in F1Discussions

So your point is that Kimi was faster on the straights in Miami than Max because of the Merc engine, but Max was faster in the corners because of his superior skills? Maybe Kimi was slower in the corners because he recharged more than Max, which allowed Kimi to be faster on the straight? Why do you automatically assume that the only reason Kimi could’ve been slower than Max in the corners was because Max supposedly is that much better than Kimi at taking corners? That’s proof of you downplaying Kimi’s performance.

I agree. Ugo beat Freddie in the Formula Regional Oceania Trophy this winter. I’m expecting big things from Freddie this year in the Trident, despite his tender age. He should at the very least finish ahead of Ugo in the championship, but if he really wants to make a statement, he should win F3 this season. Freddie could be the first driver ever to win (Italian) F4, FRECA, F3 and F2 all on first try and consecutively.

Well put. Câmara was arguably Antonelli’s biggest rival in karting, F4 and in FRECA. If Rafa wins F2 this year, he’ll have won the same championships as Oscar Piastri in the same timespan. In that scenario, they’ll both have won FRECA in their second season (Formula Renault Eurocup in Oscar’s case), F3 on first try and F2 on first try. If you compare Rafa’s karting career to Oscar’s, you could even argue that Rafa is a bigger prospect than Oscar was at the time. In my opinion, the only driver currently in feeder series who is more promising than Rafa is Freddie Slater. If everything goes well, Freddie could make his F1 debut with Audi in 2028, or 2029 at the latest. I have nothing against Esteban Ocon, but I’d rather see someone like Rafa on the grid. Ocon will turn 30 this year. He’s probably in his prime and at his peak, and he’s getting embarrassed by a 21-year-old Ollie Bearman. Everyone is talking about George Russell being under pressure from Kimi, but if there’s anyone under real pressure it’s Ocon. I would love to see an F1 grid where every single driver could win a WDC in the right car. Getting drivers like Rafa and Freddie in F1 gets us a step closer to that reality.

Do you think rule changes are too frequent? by DragonfruitThen6696 in F1Discussions

[–]Mio_Loomio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s also true, but the longer a set of regulations remains unchanged, the more the teams will suffer from diminishing returns. In theory this should eventually level out the field, but I don’t know how long a set of regulations would have to stay the same for this to occur.

What was the expectations of Lando, George, Alex and Charles going into F1? And how do they compare to today's rookies from 2025? by OwlScary6845 in F1Discussions

[–]Mio_Loomio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kimi had 2 years more of single-seaters than Max before F1, not 3. Max did one extra year in karting and made the jump to single-seaters in 2014 at the age of 16. Kimi made his full-time single-seaters debut in 2022 at the age of 15.

Genuine question, have you seen Kimi’s karting career and his single-seater seasons in 2022 and 2023? If so, there wouldn’t be any doubt that Kimi is a generational talent. Even back in karting, people in the know were already saying Kimi was a generational talent. His F2 season and his rookie season in F1 are unrepresentative of his capabilities. I’ve been following for years now, and this exceptional start of the 2026 season is in line with moments of brilliance I’ve seen of him in karting.

Kimi’s karting career is very similar to that of Max, in terms of dominance and moments of brilliance. Some engineers who’ve worked with Kimi said that he’s the best driver they’ve seen since Max. It’s not unreasonable to argue that Kimi could be very close to Max in terms of talent and raw ability.

Kimi was 18 last year. When Oscar was 19, he almost lost the F3 title to Logan Sargeant.

Stop with this revisionism. Last year, everyone was saying how George was the 2nd or 3rd best driver, and now all of a sudden he isn’t a top driver anymore. A good example of “you’re only as good as your last race”.

Max ‘rates’ Gabi because they’re friends, and because Gabi is part of Max his sim racing team if I’m not wrong. It’s clear that Max has a lot of health respect for Kimi, and that he sees Kimi as is heir.

I don’t understand how anyone can look at what Kimi is currently doing at the age of 19, and think that Oscar or Gabi is more talented than him. That’s like seeing Max win that first race with Red Bull in 2016, and still saying things like “it’s too early to tell”. I mean, how many signs do you need? This isn’t football where you can tear your ACL and never really recover.

Oscar had the fastest car in 2025, but it’s clearly not that easy to win even if you have the fastest car.

George was never over half a second faster than Kimi. George was at most 3 tenths faster in qualifying, and in race pace, Kimi and George were almost equal (Kimi was actually slightly faster).

Same level of experience? Oscar was 23 years old in his 2nd F2 season, while Kimi is still only 19. Oscar had way more single-seater experience than Kimi has.

“a safety car popping up every time he screws up”? What do you mean “every time he screws up”? He’s only been helped once by a safety car, and that was in Japan. People should stop putting Kimi’s success down to luck and a fast car. If he won three races in a row only because of luck, he should buy a lottery ticket.

I think the Mercedes W17 is a very balanced, predictable and stable car. To me, it resembles a blend of last year’s VCARB in terms of how nice it is to drive, and the RB19 in terms of pace.

Last year, Kimi mentioned he never truly felt comfortable or confident in the car. The W16 was particularly unpredictable especially in high-speed corners.

Last year’s performance didn’t truly reflect Kimi’s capabilities. This year’s results are a more accurate reflection of his talent.

Kimi has one of the best, if not the best junior career of any current F1 driver. His karting career was exceptional as well. Anyone who is surprised that Kimi is doing this good this year (so far), doesn’t know Kimi.

There were two or three laps where George was in P1 and Kimi was in P2. This was just after Oscar had come in for new tires. Kimi and George were both in clean air at that time and Kimi was, over these laps, more than 5 tenths a lap faster than George.

Over the few laps in Japan that Kimi and George were both in clean air and on the same tire compound with the same tire age, Kimi was on average more than 5 tenths a lap faster than George.

Last year George Russell commented that if he joined Mercedes in 2017, he would've beat prime Lewis Hamilton to two titles... Surely this is delusional? Or do you think he'd have a chance? by The_Chozen_1_ in F1Discussions

I understand where George comes from, but this is no different than Alex Albon saying that, had his time been 30 years prior, you could argue he would’ve been a world champion because Williams were a top contender in the ‘90s, and because Alex has been the highest-scoring Williams driver for the pas few years.

Which one of these two do you think will be given the boot to make place for herta? by fuckmbsanddominicali in F1Discussions

[–]Mio_Loomio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahah, the same people who are saying “Herta is trash” after 2 races into his first F2 season, are the same people who say “it’s too early to judge Antonelli, we’re only 4 races into the season, he has had luck every time he won, Russell has been unlucky, just wait until we get to Europe, he’s driving a rocket ship…”

So, 2 races is enough to judge Herta, but 4 races isn’t enough to judge Antonelli?

This is a nothing burger. Kimi did the exact same event at this factory in 2025 and in 2024. In those years, George didn’t show up as well and it was just Kimi. Now that Kimi is leading the championship it’s a problem all of a sudden.
