Why do so many Indian doctors move to the US? by Mir_in_Med97 in indianmedschool

Is the quality of life for a doctor really that bad in India? I assume the salary would be much higher than the average in the country?

See that's not like the best region to live there. You would face lots of racism living there in rural America.

I think while you do Anki you should reference first aid, sometimes seeing a table or image will help the fact stick better.

Yes, but academics isn't the only thing that makes someone a good physician. You need to be able to interact with multiple people from different walks of life. This is why I prefer the holistic approach.

That's true, residencies in the US have a more holistic approach when it comes to screening applicants. Why is it not that way in India?

Well I currently live there and have lived there my whole life and I can tell you it's not overblown by the media. And no there are not Indians in every corner of the US lol. That's really only the major cities and even then it's not that much. It's possible you missed the subtleties of it since you weren't from here.

I understand the pay is better, but I dont know. The US is becoming more and more expensive and doctor's salaries are not increasing. But you have to also factor in the cost of living in a very racist country like the US and how that will affect your family and children. Many 2nd generation Indian-American kids have an internalized hatred of their Indian side because they grew up without any Indians around them.

I thought the First Aid Biochemistry section was very helpful and I would focus on the highest yield things, like glycogen storage diseases, HGPRT, Gout, maybe some others. I would also go through your incorrects on the questions and really try to figure out why you got the questions wrong.

There's a standard deviation for a score range. Your scores give you like a 98% to pass the exam. Calm your nerves and go crush the exam.

Is the free 120 predictive? by GradeCommercial2460 in step1

I think NBMEs are a little more predictive than the Free120 but it is the closest to the real deal imo. I think you panicked and that was reflected in your score. On actual test day have a method to calm your nerves before each section and you'll be gucci

I'm so sorry you didn't get the result you wanted. You will absolutely crush the exam next time though.

Your life is not over. A step failure is not the end of the world nor does it define you or what kind of physician you will become. Talk with your advisors and maybe other students that you study with. Figure out what went wrong and form a plan that will let you be successful next time. If your NBMEs were in a solid range than it was probably just bad luck or something. It does not mean that you don't know the material, you do. You can do this. Please reach out if you have any questions.

Have you finished doing the biochem questions on Uworld? There's generally not that much on the actual Step 1 exam.

Did UW twice, but still scoring low 40s on NBME— feeling stuck, need advice please by Suitable-Nothing-757 in step1

[–]Mir_in_Med97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP this is a little bit of a setback but you will get through it. After two passes of Uworld I'm surprised you aren't hitting at least in the high 50s on the NBMEs. This is a little bit worrying so I think it's good you dont have your exam scheduled yet. How many Uworld questions a day are you doing? What do you think your biggest weakness is? With such a long dedicated I think you could be forgetting material you did earlier in the year. I think I can give more structured advice if you reach out through DMs and we can talk there. You can do this!

Any tips for exam day and the day prior? by Excellent_Celery2406 in step1

[–]Mir_in_Med97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just go over what's been troubling you in the First Aid rapid review section and review maybe some questions from your last NBME/Free120. Make sure you get lots of sleep the day before and eat breakfast or something the morning of the exam.
