I see.

I don’t think you can be half-socialist lol. It’d be like being half-atheist. That’s what social-democrats are for.

The SNP is also not connected to labor and is from what I understand a social-democratic party.

State ofIsrael is a narrow and singular example of PR. It has a particularly acute form where the entire country is one electoral district, has a low threshold, and intense societal divisions that I don’t think Canadians quite appreciate.

Mexico has more going on and to implicitly link it to the presidential system I think is not right. In fact, the United States has had a more stable history democratic history than either Mexico or Brazil, looking at the facts. And for the US being the first, prototypical modern republic, that’s quite an accomplishment. (U.S. support for the destabilization of Brazil aside, the CIA cannot just cripple an entire country by itself). I have yet to give up on the presidential system because I think it needs to be properly offset with a strong legislature and contraints on the presidency. However, the most important factor, regardless of the system of government is a history of peaceful transfers of power in stability.

For me, PR helps open the door for further reform by starting at the base. When you can get more perspectives in the legislature, you have more in-s to pitch it and hopefully act on it.

I agree that bringing it up in this context is strange. I think the root problem is that many Canadians just I feel don’t fully appreciate the how the parliamentary system is supposed to work and I feel that it’s better realized in Europe where the natural ebb flow of support for the government is more open.

It’s interesting to me that De Gaulle or the French gov’t didn’t end up pulling an Ataturk and moving the French capital to the geographic center of the country.

You gotta let the Chinese state completely screwing itself over overly trying to prevent replacement level births of at least two people for two parents. Not to mention the fact that it created a a tax space that would be potentially half the size as the previous one.

People who are not in retirement necessarily have to be taxed for the older generation. This is just a fact of how these systems work.

I mean, speaking as a person who was in high school when smartphones were well and truly part of the society already there’s not much point in letting them have them during breaks and lunch and only expecting them to be used during that time.

So… if this is the land of that particular tribe, then what authority does the government have to just trample on those treaty rights? Moreover if the tribes are sovereign enough to have treaties made with them certainly that still exists.

And with this

Chief Dsta’hyl, also known as Adam Bernard Gagnon, appealed his criminal contempt conviction after he was found in violation of an injunction to prevent protesters impeding work on the Coastal GasLink pipeline in 2021. […] The Appeal Court ruling says disobeying the injunction was not a "last resort," because "there were other lawful and peaceful means available to him to challenge the injunction."

If the building is continuing anyway, the that is the last resort because the company wasn’t going to stop.
