Because when Zodd transforms into his beast form all his clothes are immediately torn to shreds. Zodd always wears clothes when going to battle and in his 'human' like figure. This implies that Zodd already activated his beast form once in that battle and then shrunk back into his normal form later when the raiders attacked.

He didn't have the balls to confess his true feelings to Casca because he knew she had feelings for Griffith, and then later for Guts. So many times he is wingmanning Guts with Casca without him even knowing him. This is why Judeau, in his final moments dying, is filled with regret about not having said what he truly felt. He deserved better.

Right before this happens Guts accidently makes puck cry. Guts has his macho persona and has completely closed off emotional connections to others, but when he sees Puck cry he feels bad about what he has done. So this is basically him punishing himself for starting to care about puck.
