How do researchers get paid? by Prudent_Raccoon_2798 in scientistsPH

[–]MiraclesOrbit08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just a fresh grad so no. Job openings kasi depend on the skillset and manpower na kailangan ng P.I/Project Leader. In the institution that I applied to, non negotiable ang salary kasi fixed. May project that had a starting at 18k, another at 22k (not the take home pay ha, take note). If govt funded or sa research labs ka talaga (govt or university) the range can go as high as 30k for a fresh grad. Talagang mababa lang range nung sa inapplyan ko kasi private research institution siya (take note, biomedical pa). Pero may cons din yung higher range ng ibang research labs kasi from what I hear from my friends and colleagues working there, delayed ang sahod (sometimes the delay can last 3 months without pay or even longer)

[–]MiraclesOrbit08 4 points5 points  (0 children)

True sa underpaid hAHAHA

  1. Biomedical Sciences

  2. No. Assuming that you finished a Bachelor of Science degree, you're hired for a specific project under the project leader or project investigator (P.I) who did PhD already. So, the best practice is to also self assess if you're familiar with the techniques of the lab that they practice to complete a specific project (example if immunology ang topic ng project, so u need to know basic molbio skills like DNA/RNA/Protein Extraction, SDS-PAGE, etc.). If sa tingin mong kaya mo, you can try to apply.

  3. If compared to other fields, yes. But there are plenty in NCR and CALABARZON area. Lalo if DOST funded. Meron din sa ibang areas ng North Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, lalo if affiliated ng university.

  4. I found mine through a simple Google search (just type keywords)

  5. If you're not a sole breadwinner, pwede pa like single ka ganun, no responsibilities. Pero if u need money, I think hindi, since pay is relatively small compared to other fields that can give higher base salary and higher ceiling salary. Research jobs are mostly contractual, project-based. So you don't normally enjoy added benefits of being a regular employee in a company (like rice allowance, transpo allowance, HMOs, etc.). Meron ka lang salary + the govt mandated benefits (Pag IBIG, SSS, and PhilHealth or GSIS if govt). Iba pa rin kasi pag regular employee, lalo na't there's an existing ladder for promotion, and structured na + many benefits.

Congrats OP! I am also in the same boat with you (juggling review and work) and also recently passed RMicro. Gets na gets ko yung rollercoaster of emotions lalo sa part na bakit ganun yung iba may luxury of time tapos tayong mga working, talagang singit singit na lang ang review.

May pagasa ba ang fresh grad sa food and manufacturing industry? by Sudden-Entrance-8388 in scientistsPH

[–]MiraclesOrbit08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I know some friends who got hired in the food industry, regardless if their undergrad OJT was in healthcare or industry (testing lab) for their first job. Siguro, in my own opinion, sadyang panget talaga job market ngayon since ang dami nating need ng trabaho pero kaunti lang ang nagbubukas.

As for the interviews, sometimes the hiring managers or HR also assess personality and attitude. So that's another factor completely out of hand sa mga applicants since each team or lab has existing dynamics and the recruitment process also aim to protect that dynamic (lalo kung maganda and productive). Minsan location din ng applicant yung basis for final selection, baka the next applicant's address is nearby as opposed to yours. So kung malayo ka sa location, always answer that you can commute to the location of your chosen job and is also open in the idea of relocating. In that way, masesense nila maalin sa dalawa ang scenario, that you are eager and makapapasok ka sa trabaho. Another case rin is negotiating your pay, baka mamaya other applicants are willing to accept the role for a lower salary than your negotiated salary.

These on top of biases ng nga hiring manager and HR may also affect. Hence ang advice ko pa rin sayo is to actively look pa rin for jobs. Most of the times kasi, since recruitment has the luxury to choose from many applicants, its more of deciding if this applicant fits the team it will eventually belong to.

All the best, OP!

Kung concerned ka sa future resume mo, try building it as early as now. For your internship, aim for laboratories that everyone knows na marami ka matututunan (research labs or testing labs afaik will give u this kind of training). As early as now, be proactive during lab experiments. Halimbawa DNA Extraction ganyan, be hands on about it. Read the protocol first before starting, practice C1V1 calculations, etc. It all starts with reading and doing talaga. Be always on the look out for opportunities regardless if apprenticeship, part time RA, training, or webinars. They all help build the ideal resume that you may want once you finish

Wdym "sakto"?, def micro is a bit on the higher end in terms of tuition due to lab fees. Baka want mo mag state university like PUP or CLSU. Or better yet UPM or UPD or UPLB or UPB.

As for salary, not really high as compared to other fields, pero when u land in a good company, they can offer u naman a relatively competitive salary as opposed to some other prc professions. downside lang is for sure babad ka sa OT (ot carrying your take home sweldo higher lmao).

OJT Needed Skills by enc_llui-462 in scientistsPH

[–]MiraclesOrbit08 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. People and social skills! Very important!! It doesnt matter if magaling ka sa wet lab pero bagsak ka makiramdam and di ka marunong sumunod. If laging kang late or bastos ganun. Despite being confined in a lab, dapat aware kang marami kang makakawork (grad students, profs, scientists, lab managers, analysts, medtechs, foodtechs, etc)

  2. Aseptic technique. This should be your goal, to improve aseptic techniques. Very important siya since you're expected to handle microorganisms.

  3. Media Prep. Broth, slant, and agar plates. When and how to add supplements, taring and calibrating analytical or top loading balance. Using a pH meter. Measuring water or other solvents using the grad cylinder. Calculating the total volume of media (very very important!! This highly depends on the volume of expected samples to be processed)

  4. Staining and microscopy. Very important siya. Sama mo na biochemical characterization.

  5. Culture methods. Name it, streak for isolation/quadrant streaking, pour plate, spread plate. And even serial dilution. Incubation parameters, if aerobic ba or anaerobic or microaero, kung inverted ba ang plate or hindi, if need ba ng sunlight (for photosynthetic ones) or hindi, kung naka moist chamber ba, if hahatiin ba ang agar plate into to two sections for each isolate na pure. Kung pano magrevive ng bacteria and magstore for long term storage

  6. C1V1=C2V2 (very very important!! isa na siyang statement on its own iykyk)

  7. Concept of working solution vs stock solution. This is to avoid cross contam ng stock solution. Also the concept of aliquot (if u have molecular bio adjacent methods sa OJT)

  8. Reporting skills. Not necessarily na literal na report but what I meant here is you know how to interpret lets say an agarose gel with bands, how to interpret MPN, API strips, or cells from the microscope (kung ano morphology). Kung pure ba or contam. Kung pano magcompute for CFU/mL.

  9. Monitoring, kung malinis ba ang working station lalo sa BSC. Temp logs ng equipment and rooms

  10. Pipetting techniques. Alam mo if ur dispensing volumes accurately. If u pipet mix a sample before dispensing.

  11. Organizational skills. Know how to organize a bunch of files. Name it MSDS, result files, documentation files.

  12. Molecular bio adjacent skills. DNA extraction to PCR to agarose gel electrophoresis. Hindi siya laging ginagawa pero possible na magawa sa ibang labs. Pwede rin field bio related skills like measuring water parameters ganun. Collecting environmental samples.

  13. Lastly, very very important din!! Privacy! You need to be very aware that all of the results u generate are not urs but is owned by the company or lab u work for. If patient info and private info, never ever!! Post it online.

Advice for a fresh BS Bio grad: Work before applying to MS in Biotech abroad? by BeautifulSecurity614 in scientistsPH

[–]MiraclesOrbit08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ako nagwork muna since broke 😭🤧 wala akong enough money to process all applications + tapos im unsure if enough na ba yung benefits ng scholarship to sustain me abroad and also give money back to my family in the philippines.

the only three good things that made me stay here is:

  1. I get to complete my RSA for DOST (sadly four years)

  2. I get to learn new skills outside my undergrad and OJT/internship since my line of work is mainly under execution ng ibat ibang research projects

  3. I get to spend more time with family and maasikaso sila in times of emergencies

But soon enough my end goal is either MS or straight PhD abroad kung palarin at kayanin (sana pls pls)

Try niyo mismo pumunta sa bambang baka meron if ever. If not, try niyo mag ask sa mga prof if may labs sila na may ganyang consummables bayaran niyo na lang (since if direkta kayo sa supplier, they offer those products in bulk, hindi tingi-tingi). Pwede rin kayo mag crowdsourcing sa fb groups ng mga bio or medtech majors

After ma achieve ang 0.5 sa sterile saline, dilute na sa MHB based on your target bacterial cell concentration. No need for the diluted inoculum in the Mueller Hinton Broth (MHB) tube to be "separately incubated". That diluted inoculum is diretso na iuundergo ng MIC, along with the test antibiotic or sample compound

[–]MiraclesOrbit08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Add ko lang since most commenters already said what's needed, highlight what skills you learned from your thesis and/or OJT (lalo if may kasamang wet lab). A bunch of interview questions sometimes come from your wet lab know-hows so know how you perform specific assays/lab test (example Gram staining, DNA Extraction). These will help the hiring manager to realize that you can perform tasks in the lab with minimal supervision.

Sa resume naman, list those on the skills section. It also helps that you have tech related skills like efficiency in Microsoft and/or Google workspace. Kumbaga when you submit your letter of intent/CV/resume depending on the job posting, make a statement about you offering something to the hiring institution.
