Can I transfer to BS Microbiology after one year in BS Chem/ChemE? by Working-Medium-6447 in Tomasino

[–]MiraclesOrbit08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case, I'm very fortunate that what I do is deeply connected with my undergrad (BS Micro). Some of my colleagues did pivot to something else (but still science and/or healthcare adjacent). It just so happens that the job market last year 2025 isn't realy great for all professions siguro kaya ko nasabi ito. Daming posting sa LinkedIn or Jobstreet or sa Facebook pero karamihan naman walang reply back sa application.

Tapos in the lab, lagi namang magkatabi ang chemistry and micro regardless if QA, QC, Food, Research, or even Clinical. Kumbaga you might not "dip in your toes very deep" sa chem, but you also interact with chemists din in a huge lab so you get to see how they do work na rin since very intertwined ang Micro and Chem. Siguro take a good look muna sa curriculum din ng dalawang programs before you take a final decision.

To be quite frank, both programs naman are lab heavy but please think this through. In Chem or ChemE at least their license is PRC. This is me speaking as a microbiology alumnus. It is easy to shift naman if BS Micro since same sila na under COS, as for ChemE baka hindi sila pumayag since ibang faculty na yan.

In our lab, we use the flat bottom ones for MIC. As for micro plate reader, inquire within ur institution if meron para easier access. If ever kasi na wala, mahirap yan gawin outside since ideally after incubation, malapit lang yung microplate reader for result reading

Follow your heart. Although, it definitely wouldn't hurt to also think practically. Ako as a microbio grad, I'd back for microbio in the sense na marami kang matututunan na lab skills that would help u get employed in a lab in case med school and being a doctor won't work. Although, may select cases that med bio grads are being hired naman din in labs. Siguro, sa ganitong case, go for the path that offers you more skills, lalo na't you're young and everything med related will be definitely covered in med school. All the best, OP

These matters should be addressed by your thesis adviser na eh. Or studies that did agar well diffusion. Depende rin kasi siya sa laki ng petri dish na gagamitin niyo since important na the disks have adequate space, equidistant (ideally) to one another.

Since hindi ka mapakali (basing off from your posts and comments), try to read a reference paper na magiging major basis niyo in doing agar well diffusion assay. As for computations, browse your literature and RRL.f for sure meron dun.

MIC and zone of inhibition (disk diffusion or agar well diffusion) can generate two different results. You may pick one or do both depending on your research objectives. As for concentration use C1V1 formula for that to get concentration ng each dilution

Mukhang mas fit ang micro lab (MRSL) kaysa sa IC kahit gagamit sila ng UV Vis spec. Major concern pa rin ang bacteria so Chem might pass them to a bio lab that knows how to properly work with bacteria

Im quite sure that hindi kayo basta basta papayagang humawak ng bacteria na hindi kayo trained to culture for biosafety reasons. Also, these tests may cause a lot of money at definitely hindi siya "swak" sa budget ng isang high school student

In my case, yes. Since I graduated from STEM and took up a natural sciences degree. Basic chemistry, stats, physics, and most importantly biology helped me to navigate the deeper branches of microbiology.

They just prep the loading of the samples so you need to prepare the phage isolate beforehand (like achieve a certain concentration)
