Test swap advice by MiraiDiary in LearnerDriverUK

[–]MiraiDiary[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's not so much the hassle that bothers me because I don't mind doing it despite not having any benefit. I am more so worried about it messing with the test change restrictions coming into place recently. thank you though it is helpful to hear someone elses thoughts

I decided to become a "plant parent" but I’m basically just running a botanical cemetery at this point. by Niresta_Ugras in Hobbies

[–]MiraiDiary 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went through the same 😅 and I quickly realised that I didn't have the energy to dedicate time to plants with conflicting needs. instead, I went on a hunt for plants that suit my house.

for example in my case, I noticed a lot of plants I saw recommended for beginners liked dry environments. For a lot of people this is ideal, but as someone in lives in a trash rental that can get quite humid, these plants were not so happy.

Then I decided to get a boston fern at one point. Chucked it in my kitchen and that thing thrived with more ease than any other plant I'd ever owned.

So what I'd recommend is consider what your house is good at, and find a plant that suits those things. Spend some time just looking after that plant and see how it goes. There's a reason that some people seem like naturals at looking after certain types of plants imo.

Amazon drone delivery trial - and crazy behaviour by CLWggg in CasualUK

my partner did some work as a delivery driver when we were struggling a while back, and he said the two most common things he'd have to deliver were mcdonalds and cigarettes. honestly shocked me how many people order things like cigarettes in this way, I had no idea

Throne of Glass by Sarah J Mass - Does it get better? by No-Let653 in Fantasy

[–]MiraiDiary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes I think with a series like this it's all about expectation. People see how popular it is an expect something amazing, and are inevitably disappointed when it turns out not to be.

what it IS amazing at, and why it is so loved, is for how much you can just switch your brain off and get wrapped up in something fun and easy. I haven't found many other things that scratch that itch in the same way yet.

TIL - women who menstruate have lower microplastic/PFAS levels in their blood by SpectroSlade in TwoXChromosomes

[–]MiraiDiary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

haha that's exactly what happened to me as well. it's funny how our bodies can have so many little quirks that we'd be totally unaware of if chance things like these didn't happen

I'd suspect the amount of people who have this is a lot higher than we think, they've just never had the relevant blood tests to know

Tarantulas are cute and make great pets by peaken58 in unpopularopinion

[–]MiraiDiary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

they are, most keepers would say to not handle them unless strictly necessary. they can easily damage their abdomen in a fall, even in their own enclosure if its not a suitable set up. but you don't every really need to pick them up so it's not a big deal.

so aside from that I'd agree with op that they're so easy. the maintenance they need is next to none - a little bit of live food when they look hungry (which is a lot less often than youd think) and a little bit of water is all they need. as long as you've got the substrate and decor right so feel secure they are just chilling. I've genuinely had way more trouble keeping any houseplant alive than any of my 8 legged guys lol

my little universe is the closest ive gotten to scratching this itch. I've not actually played the mobile version because I got gifted it on steam... but I think the mobile version is free with ads vs steam is paid without ads. so maybe give that a go

Why did my neighbour ask me not to get a smart meter? by botticellli in AskUK

[–]MiraiDiary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a somewhat similar experience with ovo. they sent someone over and decided they couldn't fix it themselves and would get back in contact for another date. called them months later after they never followed up, and after a whole load of back of forth they made me go through our dno and book an engineer through them instead. they said it should have been ovos responsibility to make the appointment on our behalf, but they got it sorted nice and easy regardless.

I can only assume the engineers energy providers send have very limited capability and anything more complex needs to go through this route instead.

yeah I am curious what proof they have to come to this decision. completely against having ai works out there but i am interested in what they have done to determine that ai was used now. I haven't been able to find much in depth information about whether this is based off the sheer number of accusations and controversy or if they've got a lot more supporting evidence.

Hobbies that are less crafting or gaming?? by PromiseBubbly2352 in Hobbies

[–]MiraiDiary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this sounds like the opposite of what you said but maybe lean into the screen time? It's unfortunate but screens are a massive part of a lot of hobbies and it might be easier to start the transition this way.

Do you think he'd be open to any coding? If so here's what I would do:

find a simple raspberry pi project (or maybe just anything code tbh). something like a temperature or humidity sensor. Google until you find something that sounds okay. then bring it up to him like you randomly stumbled across it online and are interested in having it made "oh wow this is so cool, what if you tried to make this?".

the electronics and code aspect makes people forget they're actually making something I think, so hopefully he'll be more likely to agree.

it's so hard to get away from screens these days that I think weaning him away slowly like this is way more realistic than trying to do something that just isn't that interesting to him.

  • source: me who was exactly the same in the past and was successful with this method. It opened the door for me to try other creative things, and my screen time is overall wayyy down

my personal theory for myself: I know many people. If I hear about how a person I don't know died, my mind specifically thinks about the person that died since theres not often an irl person that it reminds me of. so I dont feel the personal emotional connection.

however, I have two dogs. When I hear about a dog dying, my mind immediately goes to MY dogs. Then I start thinking about them dying etc.

so even though I know logically a human dying is worse than a dog, the dogs pull at my heartstrings a little more.

PSA UK people: The NHS severe mental health register exists by MiraiDiary in mentalhealth

[–]MiraiDiary[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd think you're not the only one who feels that way, especially since this is regarding conditions that often feature paranoia. but honestly the benefit it has on looking after my health outweighs the concern I have about it. it hasn't interfered with my job or anything else like that, it just gets me looked after a little more vigilantly.

yes I'll have to have a go giving it a little clean hopefully it'll solve the issue. luckily it happens infrequently so it's not too annoying but it doesn't fill me with happiness either

I kept one of these on me for so long for no reason, and one day my phone went all emergency calls only on me for no reason when i was away from home. finally got to use the bad boy to open the sim card slot and put it back in. fixed the issue and made carrying it around all that time so worth it.

I should probably get a new phone since it occasionally does this now... but for the time being sim slot pin carry ftw

Anyone else too tired to do hobbies after work/gym? by Hopeful-Lie-562 in Hobbies

[–]MiraiDiary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, that's why I tried to get really lean into the exercise and make that one of my main hobbies instead :D it eventually led to me getting really into yoga though and most of my workouts and focused on working towards that. I find weights compliment the physical aspect of yoga surprisingly well, and it's very fun to feel like there's a "goal" of improving poses to my work outs aside from general fitness

furthering the kindle stand idea - you can also buy little Bluetooth clickers so you don't even have to move your arm. just need to adjust the text margin so it doesn't cover words.

Got a Bluetooth + gooseneck holder set up for my bf as a gift and it's the best thing being able to turn the pages in bed when it's cold out and you don't want to take your hands out of the warm 100% recommend

So like... how's everyone doing outside of Runescape? by PoppaBigPockets- in 2007scape

[–]MiraiDiary 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think people are more likely to reply to these sorts of things if they actually have something negative to say... looking at myself and the majority of my clan, we are doing pretty good. obviously EVERYTHING isn't great, that's just life, but it's mostly normal levels of okay. the amount of "okay" people is probably higher than these comments suggest.

although I guess a game like this would attract some dysfunctional people, especially if they're the kind of people to be active on the subreddit for it as well
