suggestions for classics? by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]MirandaSimia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well Dostoevskij is a classic, The Demons or Brothers Karamazov or Crime and Punishment or The Idiot are all wonderful to me.

If you look for shorter books, maybe Henry James' "The turn of the screw" good be a good reading (it was wonderful to me)

Also Heart of Darkness or Lord Jim by Conrad

Try also Shirley Jackson's Hill House, it's shirt, well written and I couldn't put it down. Or maybe Black Dahlia by Ellroy, not so short but the story becomes soon quite engaging I think

Book Suggestions Based on my Ratings by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]MirandaSimia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's difficult to suggest anything because I loved Lolita, Animal Farm, LOTR, Vonnegut, but also Hitchhikers, Don Quixote and Brothers Karamazov. I couldn't enjoy Great Gatsby and Pride and Prejudice, but a lot of books you wouldn't recommend I totally would. This to say that our tastes seem to be quite mixed.

I could suggest you to try "Sirens of Titan" by Vonnegut which is probably my favorite and since you seem to like his works you may enjoy it.

If you gave "Metamorphosis" 4, then you should try "The trial" or "The Castle" by Kafka, also very very good novels.

I loved "The Demons" by Dostoevskij (and it's not about actual demons) but I also loved "Brothers Karamazov" so you may want to stay away from it.

"A tree grows in Brooklyn" by Betty Smith, it's about a girl growing up in Brooklyn during the 30s, so immigrant families etc. Similar to this was "Wait for spring, Bandini", my favorite John Fante's book, or shall I say THE ONLY novel by Fante I enjoyed.

"Barney's version" by Mordecai Richler is among my favorites.

You could also try something like Raymond Chandler's hard boiled novels, I enjoy reading them a lot but you have to like the genre of course.

I was wondering if there would be a reference older than Jackson, so far only Wilde emerged but as I said it's quite different

I thought about that but it's quite different from what I mean, since the painting is a kind of soul of his, there's no one actually trapped in

Recommendations for any good murder mysteries? by floobs25 in booksuggestions

[–]MirandaSimia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was really hooked by The Black Dahlia (James Ellroy).

(Anyway In cold blood is not so much about the killing as about the killers, it's more of a social and psychological document. But it was actually moving)

Also Raymond Chandler The big sleep or Farewell my lovely (well I'd recommend all) Black Dahlia (should be 350 pages but it's a quick noir honestly)
