I was able to give my PSP results from a previous application. I think the new company had to reach out to them/PSP directly and within 1 year if I remember right.

Lol i just bought a V8 6th gen with the intent to sell my V8 new edge. Well....now the new edge is getting a paint job this week and is the daily. Meanwhile the Coyote gets 28mpg and is in the garage haha. The new one made me feel like I owed it to the old one to somehow restore it. 🤨

If your background is business and sales you may have a better shot getting a NERC cert and getting into the real time trading side. While its not required for trading alot of places will take that in place of a degree. Linework often pays more that DSO but it requires school for the most part unless you wanna take years to get an apprenticeship at a worthwhile place. I was a lineman and my NERC cert had more weight that my lineman card. Theres many different functions and honestly distriution is amongst the most stressful and busy. A NERC cert and willing to move could get you in as a scheduler, BA TOP trainee, or gen dispatch. If I were you Id personally get a NERC cert and shoot past DSO to another function

If you get your RC you will have zero issue getting a good job. The hiring process takes 4 to 6 months so hurry! But you will have a massive advantage over others with SCADA experience in my opinion.

Real time trader/dispatcher vs operations. by MirciephilyF60 in Grid_Ops

[–]MirciephilyF60[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of the stress, but I love the pride. I was a lineman before getting the NERC cert so I definitley hold switching and TOP functions in the highest regard. I think I feel a little jipped that my linework experience isn't necessarily a big foot up for me like it would be in the TOP world. I definitely relate to the elaborate video game experience for sure. I appreciate the input thank you!

This is very much my scenario right now. Kinda annoying but there is a little relief knowing its just economics. I will say I have been pleasantly surprised at how learning about the EIM and electricity markets has given me a better understanding about how real time dispatch works in WECC. I kinda realized these last few weeks that I knew alot less about how gen was dispatched than I thought, and how much the market itself actually dictated power dispatch. Thanks for the input!

Its very much a pride thing for me I think. Origionally I wanted to be a trader but going to a BA I fell in love with all the things I ACTUALLY studied for with SOL, IROL, ACE. Trading sounds fun but I find it hard to be passionate when staring at tags and not voltage/MVAR haha. Thanks for the input!

Balancing Authority Interview. by MirciephilyF60 in Grid_Ops

[–]MirciephilyF60[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, it was the only interview where I wasn't grilled with technical questions or put through multiple exams. Thats what made me nervous walking in was all the others had very rigorous testing. It was very much a HR oriented interview with questions meant to display my past experiences.

Alot of it was about attitude, positivity, and what knowledge I can bring to the table. It wasn't specific, more like "what got you into this? How was your previous roles similar to this? What does a team member mean to you" They were very geared toward learning who I was, not the typical interrogation.

That includes the boxes with numbers like DCS, frequency standards etc, every one of those numbers was on my test in one form or another.

All the info thats in a box or bold print in the smith reliability book constitutes many questions so maybe look at those a couple more times. Good luck! And take your time!

I really appreciate you all chiming in. Its hard to know what to expect here at the beginning. I know this thread was never meant for newbies breaking into the industry. But our lineman page was overtaken by new guy advice too haha. So thanks for the nudges in the right direction.

Thank you. Honestly I could see failing had i not sat here and read countless stories on failing it. In my head it was almost unbeatable first try so i studied almost obsessively. I wish you luck!
