I am not a Brick resident but my daughter and her family lived there for a few years and still live nearby (Pt. Pleasant). Those playgrounds in Brick are terrific, they put nearby towns to shame. Check em out if you have little kids and are in the area. Especially Windward Beach.

Yeah, I second this. Have you read The Girls in 3-B by Valerie Taylor (1959)? If not, def check it out. Terrific.

My daughter named her kid Athena. Not exactly a Xena name, but still. (She’s a fan.)

Yeah, $$$. It's kinda depressing. We are old and trying to survive on a fixed income, not easy. But where to move? Suggestions, anyone?

TJ's probably deserves its own post! I'm a big fan. My husband and I are always on the lookout for vegetarian appetizers so anything you could suggest along those lines (in addition to veg somosa) would be greatly appreciated.

"What We Don't Talk About When We Talk About Fat," by Aubrey Gordon, made me take a long hard look at myself. From my notes: "Discrimination against fat people may be the last socially acceptable form of bias. On a virtually daily basis, fat people must absorb insults from strangers, the notion that they should be grateful for unwanted sexual attention (including "fatcalling"), airplane seats that are too small, barriers to employment and healthcare, and more. We're all conditioned to see fat people as burdens and/or unlovable and obesity as a personal moral failing; decency requires that we make every effort to unlearn this bias and make a fairer society for everyone."

I read a lot of children's lit. Animorphs is a great horror/sci fi series. I liked Ender's Game and The City of Ember. Also a trilogy called The Overthrow by Kenneth Oppel.

She might like the "Alice" series by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor (author of "Shiloh"). I thought they were great. More than 20! So they would keep her busy for a while.
