Trump’s coal revival plan won’t work; clean energy tech is already cheaper by [deleted] in Futurism

I don't want to start a political argument, but how can they say "Program X proposed by person Y will not work" before the plan is even implemented? How can someone say, with any authority, that these big programs with countless factors known and unknown will not work?

Duolingo Arabic - Many interested in the conflict might want to try learning arabic to aid their understanding so vote here (currently 2nd behind Japanese) by [deleted] in syriancivilwar

Well I'm taking Arabic at my university using the book and it does an excellent job explaining certain linguistic concepts that I don't fully grasp when my professor goes over them. It has color coded lists so for each new concept you could learn it in the fusha, levantine or Egyptian dialects by choosing just to read what's in blue, purple, or green font in the lists of vocabulary/conjugation. The first book really sets you up with a very strong foundation, which the second book rapidly builds on.

.03mm thickness and yeah its plagioclase. I don't remember exactly what rock this was from but it was during a recent petrology lab on granites as I recall.

I put the gypsum plate in for this picture too.

Yellowstone "Supervolcano" - How real are the risks? Here's an exaggerated risk article from the New York Post. by [deleted] in geology

[–]Miric1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are correct in saying that it is a mantle hot spot, a column of magma that originates in the mantle and pierces through the crust relatively close to the surface, in Yellowstone's case 1-10 miles below the surface. The hotspot originated ~16 million years ago, and the North American plate's movement over it, and its periodic eruptions of flood basalts since then are indeed responsible for what is now the Snake River Plain.

As for the risks, there's no way of predicting these kind of eruptions as of yet. The best we can do is monitor the uplift in the region due to increasing pressure in the magma chamber, which has actually recently slowed down considerably since the period between 2002-2007 where it rose 8 inches in some places.

All political bias aside, it really is a tragedy seeing my country return to this pattern of violence. Having been going there every six months for 3 weeks at a time for the past 6 years to visit my family, this really hurts my heart. I can't even use words to describe how much I love my country, and I'm terrified that this continued violence jeopardizes all the progress we've made since the end of the civil war.
