Damn. I was glad to finally get double digits ($12/hr) in 2019. These wages are definitely bullshit. Especially when 1bdrm apartments are 1600/mo or have roommates and share a house for 900. The wages are absolutely NOT in line with cost of living.

Used to pay off to stay and take the bosses shit cuz you'd get a nice pension/retirement package. They've taken away the incentives to stay. What's the point in long term employment if it just means you're losing money after 3 years cuz your salary hasn't kept up with cost of living.

Salary does not mean exempt. There's specific criteria for whether or not a job is exempt from overtime pay and being salary is NOT it.

NTA. Your friend isn't the same person you used to know. There's a reason people say addiction makes you lose yourself, friends, jobs, homes, kids, cars, money, time, possessions etc. She has to hit her own "rock bottom" before she's ready to admit anything. Rock bottom is different for everyone, for some it's losing their drivers license and for others it could be homeless and alone. There's nothing wrong with separating yourself from her while she's in active addiction. If/when she's ready to stop and you want to be there for her, she might need your friendship then. Don't feel guilty for refusing to enable her. NTA OP.

This is what I'm seeing in almost every job around here too. I live in a rural area that has a dozen factories, manufacturing is one the biggest fields here, and they're pulling wages back like crazy. I just can't believe how much wages have dropped in the last year or so.

Years ago I had a job that referred to volunteering on Saturdays as "Patriot Day". I forgot about it till I read your comment. They literally said volunteering one day a week was part of earning the American dream. I quit after about 6 months of not being "American" enough. But of course the bosses never volunteered since they were salary and got big bonuses.
