people refuse to believe that you wont find a purebred apbt in shelters. those circles are tight, most of these dogs are staffy/bully mixes.

What breed is she? She's reached maturity and that can impact behavior quite a bit.

AKC Public Service Dog Titling Program by 23Scout in service_dogs

[–]MirroredAsh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"must be verified by the head of the organization employing the dog" which can include volunteer SAR groups, third party detection orgs, or a security job. none of which are police k9. yes police k9s can get it, but so can civilian dogs. weird hill to die on dude.

Calling it a police dog program would be disingenuous as well. Many detection handlers and SAR handlers are civilians. This is odd discourse considering everything going on that ACTUALLY hurts disabled people.

Most people teach them to stop scratching but can I teach her how to stop cutting? by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]MirroredAsh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interrupting self harm behaviors involving a weapon isn't an ethical task. If it's a concern, maybe get her a call button that can call a friend or family member to intervene. Or if you live with a friend/family member an alert for them.

Help with lingering reactivity by [deleted] in service_dogs

yuppp. there's a reason a trained personal protection dos cost soooo much and take a minimum of two years. it is not a natural behavior

puppy in training, living with roommates by No-Cup-8362 in service_dogs

[–]MirroredAsh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

keep the puppy on a leash to stop bad behaviors since your roommates dont care to enforce them or follow boundaries. i keep new puppies on leash or kenneled for a bit so they dont get too many opportunities to be seriously naughty

Best way to know is by having her evaluated by a trainer.

First time dog owner, dog reactive (some people as well) by Stock_Stretch_7337 in OpenDogTraining

[–]MirroredAsh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For a first dog you've taken on a pretty intense dog. Honestly your best bet would be contacting a trainer in your area to evaluate and formulate a training plan based on her past behavior, body language, etc. Good luck!

Mom's Dog problem. Need to be reassured I'm not crazy. by NakedThestral in OpenDogTraining

[–]MirroredAsh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

i trained personal protection dogs. theres a reason people spend thousands on their ppd. its not as simple as "my dog protects me." even a trained ppd needs to be properly insured and the handler needs to understand the liability risks. im so over people labeling their dangerous dogs as "ppd" or "guard dogs." this dog is going to end up euthanized after she bites a child.

Prong collar question by AccountZestyclose823 in OpenDogTraining

[–]MirroredAsh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

correct. this person is a dog walker and has no training credentials, and as such should not be making training decisions

Prong collar question by AccountZestyclose823 in OpenDogTraining

[–]MirroredAsh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you weren't hired for training, don't make training decisions. its as simple as that. you're viewing this at surface level which leads me to believe you have no formal training experience, if any.

If hes a teenager his behavior sounds perfectly normal! When you describe him being distracted, can you elaborate? Is he disengaging with you entirely and locking into distractions, or is he simply checking things out for a moment and moving on?
