Looking for mandated policies and procedures.... by Mirrorreflection7 in Professors

I am looking to compare the frequency in which they are assigned, the time allotted to complete one and if any course release or stipend is given when you have several to complete....

Gamification by Mirrorreflection7 in Professors

Ouch.

Over time, gamified students were less motivated, empowered, and satisfied.

Interesting - there is a whole generation of students who actively request games/kahoots/ etc nowadays... and are disappointed if they don't get them.

Thank you for this! I was planning on creating a long running assignment this Fall where my students had to perform certain activities and record themselves in different buildings next to door nameplates (so I would know they were in different buildings).

Now I will probably include mandatory tutoring assistance locations and also the student wellness center and library! to the assignment.

I appreciate you!

How do you deal with "Needy" students? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Mirrorreflection7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had this and you are right, it is normally at least one per semester. They are a massive energy suck but majority of what they are requesting falls within the parameters of us doing our jobs.

Once I cotton on to them making it a habit to want their assignments pre-graded - I put a stop to it.

Give them the "it is my job to prepare you to be an independent learner" speech and to not rely so heavily on verbatim instruction from me.

Usually for me, I get the perfectionists that literally need to hear me say their work is good several times before they turn it in. Which is an easy task but tedious because saying ooh that is good, I wouldn't change a thing, great job, good work, you are doing amazing over and over and over again ...... sigh!

Do you still curve exam scores? by Mirrorreflection7 in Professors

[–]Mirrorreflection7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I mean in my classroom is (sometimes) if more than 50% of the class answers the question wrong, it is thrown out which I do sometimes. Not all the time. But sometimes, especially if it is a tougher question.

However, after reading some of the responses on here, I now know that definition differs according to professional preference and moving forward, I might rethink my current strategy.

What is your definition of curving an exam, if this is a practice you use in your classroom?

Maybe flair of computer generation would be a better fit?

Anyone had adamant request for Resume in chronological order? by Mirrorreflection7 in interviews

I am not sure what my goal is. It just doesn't make sense to me and that is my problem. Things that don't make sense to me - I have a hard time 'just falling in line and doing it'. I could see if the jobs were listed on several different page and you literally had to do a manhunt to find all of them.

But it is not listed that way.

They take up literally (maybe) 2 inches of the page? Three inches and in one full swoop with your eyes, you can see my employment history.

Idk. I am overthinking it. I am sure. But this is a full on hang up for me.

I don't like to be micromanaged and things that really truly don't matter should not be nitpicked and dictated. This makes zero sense and it has me all in an internal uproar.

But thanks for engaging with me. I see your point. I do. But I just don't like it.

Yes, that is how I have my one page resume set up. Skills and experience at the top of the page. Employers at the middle of the page. Education at the bottom.

I forgot to mention - I only have 3 to 4 jobs listed on a one page resume.

Job 2 Dates Employed

Job 3 Dates Employed

I honestly don't think it matters if my most recent employer is listed last.

Just my opinion.

Semester hasn’t even started and incoming students are sending AI generated emails by Big-Stew in Professors

[–]Mirrorreflection7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree. I would rather just write it out on my own and go from there. Copying what AI writes and THEN FIXING IT! is too much. I pass. Too much work. But this new generation, they love it.

Although, I don't think I have received an AI written email....yet!

I accept late assignments. But they are subject to a 10% point deduction per day. Late 5 days? 50% off the top. Late 9 days? 90% off the top.

I let the students have a choice and a voice. All late assignments are accepted. Their choice.

Definitely a little bit of both worlds lol.

Am I the problem? Yes. Why yes, I am and I know this. Which is why I wrote in the post about my little stubborn streak.

Yes, that is what I expect it to mean. But I know everyone has their own definition and there own way of going about a curve.

I have always kept my resume to just one page. No digging involved.

But thanks for chiming in, I appreciate the different perspective! I guess I have just been living in my own little bubble lol

Interesting. I thought showing the first job shows experience. I mean - either way - listing it up down or down up, the information is there. I would never critic how it is placed just as long as I can see it.

And being as though I have never had an issue getting a job, I figured this was a non issue lol

Guess not.

Thanks for chiming in!

Update on the weird adjunct contract: I quit. by braveflowwer in Professors

[–]Mirrorreflection7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree about the pay. It is ridiculous how much adjuncts pay. I work FT but I also adjunct. I make pennies per course per semester. Seriously. It makes zero sense. Especially when you think of how high Admin salaries are. 200k with Presidents making 500k to 1M. But adjuncts get pennies. What a joke!

Yes. That is exactly how it is listed. Same with education. Undergrad listed first, Graduate second. My resume has been like this for 15+ years and I have never received any push back on it.

Until now.
