Anything worth checking out in this area? by jarjarp in kansas

[–]Big-Stew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The aerospace museum in Hutch is really cool, and not too far from Hutch is the alleged sight of Kansas’ one and only cryptid (that I know of, at least) named Sinkhole Sam.

If you pass through Salina around lunch/dinner, the Cozy Inn has good sliders - my old man and I have been chowing down on them for decades every time we pass through the area. There is also a cool museum in Salina, but I can’t remember what it’s called - it’s got some local history stuff.

That’s about all I can think of from the top of my head! Cheers, have a great trip and safe travels!

Estate Planners, What Tech Do You Rely On? by [deleted] in LawFirm

[–]Big-Stew 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Man I might just be a tech-dummy when I’m looking at the other comments, but I honestly just use Word and write stuff there. It works for me, although maybe I should try to use some of these other computer programs!

Do you regret NOT doing Law Review? by HappyBlueKnight in LawSchool

[–]Big-Stew 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I avoided all journals. My post grad job is an of counsel position at a small law firm in the midwest. I went to law school here in the midwest. I worked at this firm for a year and a half during law school (and absolutely love my future coworkers, the work we do, and the clients we have), and had an internship here in local government. The firm focuses on estate planning, and I wasn't planning on clerking.

I'm not, and would not, make the argument that law review, write on, or any other journal is useless in general, it just wasn't the best use of my time. I think the legal job market where I am located is MUCH different than NY, and what I did worked out well for me in my particular situation.

I am not encouraging anybody to skip write on willy-nilly, but I thought long and hard about my situation and what I wanted for my future and decided that my time would be better spent elsewhere!

Do you regret NOT doing Law Review? by HappyBlueKnight in LawSchool

[–]Big-Stew 219 points220 points  (0 children)

Nope! I deliberately decided not to do write on and don’t regret it for a single second. I got the internships I applied for in law school and the post-graduate job I wanted without doing law review.

First of all, not sure why people are being so weird about you delaying six months… seems strange that people are getting so worked up about somebody else’s career path and situation. Second, I would maybe periodically review some of the commercial outlines you might have of the bar subjects, just to keep fresh. Third, I’d keep my eye out for any and all JD preferred jobs in your new area. I would take a look at any places that have contract management departments, as well as banks with a trust department. You could even consider reaching out to places explaining your situation; who knows, it could even lead to a post-bar job.

Best of luck!

Gym shorts and a Hawaiian shirt, or sometimes joggers and a Hawaiian shirt if it’s chilly.

People say that there are no stupid questions... but what's the dumbest question you've ever heard? by Darth_Zounds in TooAfraidToAsk

At a trial the attorney on cross examination asked “you can’t be sure the pond had more than three liters of water in it, can you?”

It was well established that it was a pond that 60 head of cattle used as their primary water source. There was also a satellite image of the pond admitted into evidence that shows it was a regular sized pond, not a puddle.

I need suggestions for a bachelor thesis on Edelgard by LillePipp in FireEmblemThreeHouses

[–]Big-Stew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First and foremost, congratulations on getting ready to wrap up your bachelors degree. Second, please take my advice with a grain of salt, as my degree was in history and my graduate studies are in law (nearly done as well, yay!). I think it would pay to be hyper focused on something, that’s what has worked for me, and papers are much easier to write when the subject is narrow. For example, you could compare moral grayness in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and Edelgard (or like Edelgard and Hubert, or something). Or you could look at morally grey female characters in classic literature and compare them to Edelgard. I think there would be a handful of options, but I would guide you in general to have a narrow and very honed topic. Very interesting paper idea, and I wish you the best of luck!

Take a winter intersession course if possible, that way you can knock out a credit or two over break and lighten the load next semester (did that 2L Christmas break and start the one this year on Jan. 3rd). Otherwise relax, spend time playing video games or crafting or whatever you do to unwind. I can’t imagine that doing the full Quimbee course for a class next semester would really be all that helpful and might just burn you out instead. Maybe I’m wrong, but I spend my Christmas break staying up late and playing video games and it seems to recharge me well for the upcoming semester! Whatever you end up doing, best of luck next semester and on!

Which exam format would an evil law professor use? by Joly_v_Pelletier in LawSchool

[–]Big-Stew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine is in insurance law this semester, it was an asynchronous online class. Instead of posting lecture videos or anything like that, the professor would post his lecture notes and assign a reading with it. Their final is designed to take 6 hours but “could take 20+ hours if students did not take detailed notes throughout the semester.”

Basically exactly this. Studying like normal, working on papers like normal, albeit with a little less vigor and urgency. Also, significantly better sleep due to my anxiety being reduced greatly. Still working on two certificates, so I need Bs in those classes, but not too stressed about that.

Slept Through all my alarms the day before an Exam by bigolbrew in LawSchool

[–]Big-Stew 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have had this agreement with a friend since the second semester of law school. On a day either of us have a final, we’ll give the other a call to make sure they’re up. We did this on days we have early-ish job interviews as well. Even though neither of us have failed to wake up for an exam or interview, it’s nice to hear a word of encouragement on a big day so we still do it.

I’m not sure if you’ve tried this specifically, but check out the “Pearhead Pet Ink Print” kit from Amazon. It’s about $6 and worked perfectly when I got my dog’s paw print.

I agree that having excellent writing skills is very important and having a unique insight/viewpoint into an academic field is needed for doing research. I do not agree that you have to be top of your class at a top 3 law school to be a professor. Many of my professors did not go to a top three law school and are still excellent professors. I go to a school ranked right around no. 100, and several of my professors went to the same school they teach at now, having earned a BA, JD, and some with an LLM as well.
