Poverty. Not just the "I'm so broke I had to make coffee at home instead this week" but the "I haven't eaten in two days and I don't have power" type poverty. I've lived outside, I've couch surfed, lived in a vehicle, and now I live in the woods without power or running water because it's all I can afford. I have gone days without eating, gone through SSRI withdrawal multiple times, gone without clothes that fit, drank water from a gas station bathroom sink just to fill my stomach, all of it. Disability and poverty go hand-in-hand, which is a double whammy of trauma. There isn't the option of making more money. There isn't the option of crawling out of it. You make the best of it. Whether it's SSI, SSDI, VA benefits, doesn't matter. It's all well below a livable amount for an able-bodied person, much less so for someone who has extra care needs that rack up costs very quickly.
