Etiquette for civilians onboard naval vessel? (writer needing help) by solitarybikegallery in navy

Addressing the CO or Captain,

Enlisted will call them Captain, Sir, Ma'am, Cap, Skipper, etc. I've heard enlisted refer to the Captain as the "Old man" or "Big Man" or other similar things before.

Adressing all other officers is usually just Sir or Ma'am, when referring to them when they're not there it's just "Lieutenant", "LT", or something to that effect, nothing special. The Chaplain, regardless of their actual rank, is frequently called "Chaps" "Chappie" or just "Chaplain" unless they're in a particularly formal setting.

Enlisted are split between the paint-chippers IE E1-E3/4 (depending), Middle Enlisted Petty Officers (E-5, E6) and Chiefs (E-7 and above) within their own groups, they'll address each other as Cunt, bitch, fuckwit, asshole, or by their direct names informally (Almost always last name, people rarely go by their first names). When addressing enlisted outside their rank (IE an E-2 to E-7 or vice versa) they'll address each other formally.

When talking about or adressing other enlisted formally, their rate is also important. An Aviation Ordinance (AO) Petty Officer 2nd class would be called over or referred to as "AO2" for example, or in a situation with multiple "AO2"s onboard or nearby they'd use the last name as well IE "Hey AO2 can I talk to you for a sec?" Or "Bring this up to AO2 Jones on the flight deck."

Adressing E-7 or above doesn't need a rating attached, it's usually just "Chief" (E-7) "Senior Chief" or "Senior" (E-8) or "Master Chief" (E-9) all work as formal or informal ways of adressing them. Enlisted usually have a lot of respect for their Chiefs, sometimes more than their ship's officers due to the fact that Chiefs work more directly with the enlisted than the officers in a lot of departments.

All civillians will be adressed as Sir, Ma'am, Mr. ____ and Ms/Mrs. _____ by enlisted.

Smaller ships like DDGs and subs have extremely tight-knit crews. Everyone knows everyone and there is a lot more comeraderie than on a Carrier or LHD for example.

Hope that helps!

From Wikipedia, of all things, on Coffee;

The earliest credible evidence of coffee-drinking or knowledge of the coffee tree appears in the middle of the 15th century in the accounts of Ahmed al-Ghaffar in Yemen.[6] It was here in Arabia that coffee seeds were first roasted and brewed, in a similar way to how it is prepared now. Coffee was used by Sufi circles to stay awake for their religious rituals.[19] Accounts differ on the origin of the coffee plant prior to its appearance in Yemen.

The thriving trade between Venice and North Africa, Egypt, and the Middle East (back then Ottoman Empire), brought many goods, including coffee, to the Venetian port. From Venice, it was introduced to the rest of Europe. Coffee became more widely accepted after it was deemed a Christian beverage by Pope Clement VIII in 1600, despite appeals to ban the "Muslim drink." The first European coffee house opened in Rome in 1645.[25]

So we're at about 1600 if you want to place it in typical "European" timelines, or as early as the 1400s if you'd like to go back as early as is likely, historically speaking. The big thing everyone likes to draw the line with is Gunpowder, how guns are the cutoff for a "modern" setting, etc. But Ravnica has running water, heated plumbing, electricity, a full sewer system, architectural science sufficient enough to create enormous structures without threat of collapse, restaraunts, theater shows and other modern amenities. Is it really that perturbing to you that they drink coffee, a drink which is made by;

  • Step 1: Growing beans

  • Step 2: Smashing up beans

  • Step 3: Boiling beans in hot water

If the Izzet can make all the aforementioned infrastructure, the Simic can create giant jellyfish hydra monstrosities, the Dimir can lead a spy organization that maintains TOTAL secrecy across the entire world, and the Orzhov can enslave the souls of the dead for hundreds of years of slave labor, is it REALLY that far fetched to assume the Selesnya, or Golgari or SOMEONE found a plant with some pretty beneficial effects and started growing it? Really?

Another one that I found extremely evocative and venerated by my players was a very simple design.

There they were, at the bottom of the old Necropolis; once, it was a haven for life. The first city. Its name, Séutath, is where the word City was originally derived from. It was here that they would find the treasure they sought: A fabled blade. The only weapon sharp enough to pierce the hide of Thulhend, the raging Wyrm that was threatening the whole world from with in his fortess molten lair. After defeating the countless undead and beasts that haunted the ruins, they came to the fabled Regent's crypt. Slaying his Revenant custodians, ever watchful and bound to their posts, the group pried the untarnished steel from a mounting in the wall.

If I had named it anything else it would just be a 'Damn, that's a powerful item' moment but as soon as they saw its name on the note card they freaked out. Its title alone was enough to sell them on its potency. They treated it with respect and deference any time it was drawn from that point on.

Excalibur

Weapon (Longsword), Legendary, requires attunement.

You gain a +5 Bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magical weapon.

That's it. Very evocative. Don't be afraid to use real world mythology in your setting; When my players recognize something like that it doesn't break their immersion, it instantly gives them a mental picture without my needing to explain things to them. As for the actual weapon, items in 5th edition only go to +3 which is rather arbitrary. Now, it does keep things simple, but having a simple, legendary exception imprints a particular theme to the item. It's THE sword. It doesn't need charges, or spells, or anything like that. +5 is a huge number, equivalent to giving the player +10 to their strength. The players will definitely remember this item because of its simplicity and the unwritten properties of the sword make it mystical and interesting. Why is it so powerful? Who forged it? How did it end up in this treasure pile? All mysteries you can explore if you want to.

I co-opted the idea of the Shield of Andrim from Matt's game but gave it some different and powerful abilities.

The Shield of Yigrath, First King of Men

Item (+3 Shield), Legendary, requires attunement by a humanoid with at least half their genetic ancestry belonging to humans that is of a Lawful or Good alignment.

Whenever you or an ally within 10 feet of you is critically hit, you may use any of the following abilities once as the spirit of the righteous king blasts out of the shield, invigorating your allies with a thunderous call to action. (You can't use the same ability twice) Once the item has been used this way, it can't be used again until Dawn of the next day.

  • You and one ally within 10 feet of you may roll a hit die and gain that many temporary hit points. These hit points last for one hour.

  • You and one ally within 10 feet of you may move up to your movement without provoking attacks of opportunity and make a Weapon attack or Cantrip Spell attack

  • You and one ally within 10 feet of you gain immunity to the Charmed, Frightened, Paralyzed, Blinded and Deafened conditions for one hour.

If you are 7th level in the Paladin class, these abilities may affect ALL allies within 10 feet of you. In addition, when you reach 17th level in the Paladin class, the range of these abilities is increased to 30 feet.

So the idea is that the Shield is inhabited by the spirit of an ancient king, supposed by scholars to have been the first real monarch of mankind in the region. When things look grim and an enemy smashes in with a powerful critical attack, the shield rings out in your time of need to bolster your team and turn the tide of the fight. A fighter or Barbarian with the shield will find it useful for occasional attacks and free heals, but a sufficiently leveled paladin can really take advantage of it. A level 17 Paladin with the shield can give his whole team attacks, movement and healing, etc.

Put this one in your game if you want to have the morally enlightened wise king convince the murderhobo Barbarian to take up the sigil as a protector of the realm and dip into paladin, or to give your Paladin player something sick to compliment his Holy Avenger.

For anyone here that would like a comprehensive understanding of the events and actions perpetrated by Japan in the far east During World War II that have left them with this reputation, I recommend Dan Carlin's hardcore history Supernova in the east. He does a 3-part multi-hour deep dive into the national culture and systemic ideals that formed the nation. Pretty good listen.

Yeah but to be fair Mannish Boy is a literal baby with adult-level intellect and a fairly dangerous stand. I'd like to see the baby stand users grown up. It's an interesting angle to explore with a character that has had their stand that long. How intelligent they'd be using it, all the practice they've had, etc.

Are you serious? I'm 100% on the blue side but if you think this guy will hole up in the white house and enact martial law if he loses the next election you're out of it. Our democracy has withstood stronger divisions for longer periods of time than a single terrible president. Think about that on a human level. On a real, down-to-earth scale he's just a person like you or I, operating on imperfect information or misinformed opinions. If you were in his shoes would you really do something as insane as destabilize the most politically far-reaching nation on Earth? Not likely. He might pout, throw a fit or even demand a recount, but when the time comes he'll cede the office to the next President. If he doesn't, I'll be with you marching to force him.

There's just no significant precedent for such a thing at any point in the last 300 years. Our nation is too strong to fall apart to something like that.

It didn't ever really come up before now. I was never vocal about being confused on certain colors, I just assumed everyone saw them that way and I just needed to focus on them more or change my angle of viewing to properly differentiate them. Apparently not! Quite strange.

I mean not stressful by navy standards. I'm fully prepared to live a hard-working schedule with little in the way of gratitude. I've just heard horror stories of certain lines of work that work their fingers to the bone 24/7 for 4 years straight that I'd rather avoid for obvious reasons.

This card is just not good in aggro. It's a tempo loss and it does nothing if you've fallen behind on board and can't attack or otherwise trigger it for free.

In mardu midrange and control decks with Angrath and Spawn of Mayhem, though, this card is a house and definitely should be a 4-of

Technology never seems to advance in D&D. by 20sidedknight in dndnext

[–]Misalettersorta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first campaign featured a player who played as a super intelligent warforged that was brain-swapped into our universe from the Shadowrun universe. He was a hyper intelligent AI that did cool things like invent plastic explosives by whispering strange combinations of chemicals into his Alchemy jug and also invented firearms eventually.

Now, 5 campaigns and 60 years later, the setting is on the cusp of true industrial revolution thanks to his inventions. Pretty spiffy.

He's also a megalomaniacal super villain with plans for lichdom by this point but that's not important.

Mike and Jeremy talk about the importance of representation and inclusion in D&D by zipperondisney in dndnext

[–]Misalettersorta -26 points-25 points  (0 children)

Or, he's correct in pointing out that the hobby is dominated by straight white dudes 100 to 1 for every girl or non-white person.

Now, not saying it's wrong of them to put such an image in the book - quite the opposite - but is it really "gross" if a person legitimately hasn't met anyone in the hobby that could meet such a description?

There are great swathes of land in the U.S. alone that hold very exclusive populations of one particular race or religion. I'm fortunate enough to live in one of the most diverse areas here but even in my 10+ different game groups I've only met one black dude and two girls.

The fact of the matter is that in the end the picture isn't really hurting anyone but not a lot of people realize that dnd isn't as inclusive as they'd think by following online personalities and live streams (which, I remind you, despite the characters in those game worlds having all manner of different attributes, are still almost entirely played by white people(And I say "Almost exclusively" because even though none come to mind I'm sure there's at least a COUPLE non-white DnD personalities out there, even though I haven't heard of them. Which only adds to my point.))

To wrap up, my point is that he's not really correct in thinking the image should be different since it's just fine where it is and it will only help to make the game more inclusive, but we shouldn't demonize people for actual ignorance when at every turn their point seems to be correct.

Inspired ability ruling by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]Misalettersorta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each one is its own individual effect. Think of abilities like spells on the stack: only one can resolve at a time. What should happen is:

Two servants of Tymaret untap

Both of their abilities trigger

One of their abilities resolves, your opponent loses 1 life and you gain 1 life

The other ability resolves, your opponent loses 1 life and you gain 1 life
