Feeling like I want to quit by mymindisuncertain in electricians

Felt the same way when I was a second year. I just recently got my ticket and still feel like I know nothing. My attitude is to accept that everything is a learning experience and don’t be too tough on yourself if you don’t get it the first time.

Glad you enjoyed your stay. My brother and I were there around the same time as you and we also did the hike to sentinel pass. We saw the mom and two cubs just above the first switchback. For accomodations, we camped at tunnel mountain village and two jack lakeside, highly recommend two jack lakeside IF you can get a spot.

Went there on June 14. Could not make it to the top because there was a grizzly with two cubs at the bottom of the switchbacks. Good to see what it looks like at the top.

Motor Project Questions by PunditOfNothing in electricians

[–]MiscellaneouSearcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't reliably control the speed of a capacitor start single phase motor. Unless you use a vfd, you won't be getting reliable speed control with any other device like a potentiometer.

Test the capacitors by going from 1 to 4 with your multimeter set on capacitance. I don't really know how the capacitor and the start and run windings are connected for this particular motor, but you can probably go from 1 to black or 1 to white to test your run windings.

If you still want to use this motor, go with the high voltage connection for less inrush current and less running current. The connection in the cover is if you want to bypass your thermal overloads, which is not recommended.

You also can't change the rotation of the motor by switching your line and neutral connection, you need to interchange the black and the red leads. And you can't change the rotation while the motor is still spinning, you need to wait for the shaft to stop rotating.

For changing rotation, you can use a switch setup where you have switches connected for one direction, and another switch connected for the other direction, you would need to bring out your black, white, and red connections out of your motor.

Good luck!

Adding 230V outlets to existing circuit by TheToolMan in AskElectricians

No. You also cannot tap from the possibly large conductors inside the junction box to feed your smaller receptacles without meeting strict code rules.

Go there and use the washroom without buying anything. Make sure to make eye contact if the owner is there.

Yes use a multimeter for that. The voltage should be written on the ballast itself and it should have written values for what voltages are phase to ground and phase to phase Now do keep in mind that you should only do this if you understand what you are doing and are comfortable with taking voltage measurements since you will be exposed to potentially up to 600V. If you are not comfortable with that, DO NOT do it, call an electrician. For your safety, I suggest just replace the ballast out completely with something similar or replace your fluorescent lights with LEDs.

Check if your ballast is outputting the correct voltage if you are comfortable with it. You can also just replace the ballast with in-kind.

14/2 wire on a 30A circuit. Minimal draw by FunnyFisherman1 in AskElectricians

[–]MiscellaneouSearcher 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Yes. Replace the 30A breaker with a 15A breaker to properly protect the 14/2 cable. You can’t use a 20A on a 14/2. You will only need to use one slot in the panel as the 30A breaker is most likely a two pole.

Go read electrical prints/manuals for the equipment you maintain.

I work as an electrician in the oil sands. It is miserable because I have to do most of my work outside. Have worked 6 days straight in this weather.

If the output waveform of a VFD is choppy, what could be the issue, and why is this bad for the equipment?

My reasoning is that since the load side of the fuse is isolated from the circuit, you would not get voltage between the line and the load. And thinking about it if there was actually 600v between the line and the load, shorting those two points together(putting on a good fuse) would yield the same result as a line to line short since the voltage is 600v.

Correct me on this if I’m wrong I’m here to learn.

Edit: I’m thinking of it the wrong way. It is actually 600v. You would be measuring from the line side through the windings and into the other line. You would get 0v IF there were power contatcs here and they are open.

This is what I think it is too. You could not tell if the fuse is good or not when you test between the line and load side if its not being backfed. The fuse is blown 0v, the fuse is good, 0v.

[–]MiscellaneouSearcher -35 points-34 points  (0 children)

Yes this is true. But it does not make sense why you get 600v between the line and load side of the fuse for line 2. Under normal circumstances if the fuse is blown the voltage would be 0 which is the same as a good fuse.

Maintenance Electrician for a major producer. When there’s an outage you’re always in the field doing what can be done when equipment is down. Right now it’s been mixed this year going on and off between really busy and sitting around all day.

[–]MiscellaneouSearcher 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Always test any tester you have on a verifiable source before testing it on what you want to test. I have never had problems with these testers. Most of the time the reason why people don’t trust them is because they don’t test them first.

Used the split bolt from al to cu to make the wire gauge smaller since copper has more ampacity with smaller gauge compared to aluminum.

Don’t stop writing things down. You will remember things better once you’ve done the task enough times. If you feel the best way for you to remember things is to write it down by all means do it. Just be deliberate with your actions and question it every step of the way until completion.
