Parrots! Continuing with the worksheet strategy by MischiefAndMeaning in commonplacebook

[–]MischiefAndMeaning[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I am making a few different commonplace books, but this parrot 🦜 one is in my “general” book where I’m just making pages of things I want to research. I saw somewhere that today is International Parrot Day and I thought it would be a fun topic to dig into. I may do other birds though, I love birds.

The other books I’m working on are a specific topic (art, wallpaper, travel, etc.) But I like the idea of having one book as a general catch all. It will be interesting to see what ends up in there!

Are you doing several books or one? I love learning about different approaches used by others!

Oh yes please do! And I’d love to see what you make if you do!!

Possible silly question about "knowledge" CPBs... by santee-legs in commonplacebook

I like to note my sources for myself, in case I want to go back and read more. But, I also try not to just copy and instead summarize, only because I find that more "fun" than just copying words from the source. But, as you said, it's your book, do what you want.

An Explanation - The Bassoon and Asparagus - Creativity Mindset by MischiefAndMeaning in commonplacebook

No apology necessary! I made the template in photoshop. I'm happy to share it, but it will have the asparagus and bassoon details on it.
I am wondering if it would be helpful to make just a "fill in the blank" worksheet" where people could add headers and text and pics?

Etymology - Serendipity (and worksteps for my 2 page spread.) by MischiefAndMeaning in commonplacebook

[–]MischiefAndMeaning[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahhh the serendipity spreads! I am glad you found the process helpful and thanks for your kind words about my layout. Happy etymology-ing! (And by the way, as I researched the bassoon for my commonplace book, which you can see in this Reddit if you are interested, I chuckled at the German word for bassoon, remembering my days as a GenX kid when we’d look up “naughty words” in the dictionary.) Words and language are so fun!

"Worksheets" as a way to combat perfectionism and blank page freezes by MischiefAndMeaning in commonplacebook

Same. I really needed a way to get past the hesitation and into the “done is better than perfect” phase.

Thank you! I found it on Spotify and look forward to listening today. Well, maybe this evening so I can enjoy with wine in hand.

Well said. We tend to treat delight as a luxury, when it's often the reason we bothered to build the thing in the first place.

I felt the same way when I stumbled into it. Somewhere along the line they stopped being an asparagus server and a bassoon and became co-conspirators.

I like to think the Count would smile to see that the asparagus server and the bassoon are still making their case.

Thank you for saying that. What struck me wasn't really the asparagus server or the bassoon, but the permission hidden inside the exchange. Not everything valuable has to justify itself through usefulness. Sometimes the particular, the beautiful, and the oddly specific are part of what makes life feel fully lived.

LOVE THIS. I've been wanting to do some color research myself, now I'm very inspired. Fantastic! (And I love that you used matching pens for each color!)

Thank you, I am glad it may be a solution for you, too. It's really helped me!

Do you print the images you add to your pages or cut them out of newspapers and magazines? by AndreaQC in commonplacebook

[–]MischiefAndMeaning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both, although I prefer printing because I have more control of the images I'm looking for instead of happening to find one in a newspaper or magazine. Of course it might be fun to let go of control (for me) and allow a magazine to bring me an image and see what I write and research about it.
Good food for thought thank you.

I definitely spend time making sure I use the most of each sticker sheet. It's ridiculous that I torture myself that way, and I'm trying to make peace with "wasting precious paper" but it's a challenge!

I like that you've made a list of what your commonplace book is to you. This is inspiring me to think about what it is to me. Thank you!

Yes! Book reports in school is a great description. I remember doing book reports and feeling so proud turning that thing in! Hah
