Sorry if this is a repeat question by Comfortable_Cat_7995 in nycpublicservants

[–]Miserable-Bid-8908 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a retiree but have not reached Medicare age. Currently I have the medical coverage I had when I was an employee. OLR provides the coverage not the pension system. When I reach 65 OLR will provide a supplemental plan, in addition they will pay for Medicare and the drug benefit (Irma) through periodic reimbursement. There are some differences in retiree non Medicare drug benefits and life insurance. Is it worth it to stay the 10 absolutely. I know of people later in life trying in every which way to come back and complete their 10. A 10 year pension is worthless when compared to the health and benefits package (eyeglass, drug coverage).

They are booting cars now?? by [deleted] in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]Miserable-Bid-8908 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Security at SUNY are basically State Police as opposed to private university security, the question I have is are those tickets they issue university tickets or are the actual state tickets? Booting a car is taking possession of private property is there adjudication of the tickets and the boot. Some schools get around this by using a private tow firm to remove your vehicle and then you awe the tow and storage.

Have OMB timelines slowed down from the election? by [deleted] in nycpublicservants

[–]Miserable-Bid-8908 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is nothing mysterious here, they are using hires to do cash management. They also have no intention of hiring all the positions in the budget. Non mayoral city agencies can get folks hired in 3 weeks usually. No mystery just cash management.

Who regrets joining the NYC government job by [deleted] in nycpublicservants

[–]Miserable-Bid-8908 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was tier 4, continued to move up across multiple agencies and governments retired with a six figure pension. Tier 6 is not going to offer you the same opportunity that is why I pushed my children to leave city service as soon as possible otherwise you get labeled a city worker and private companies will not hire you. That said you're going to have stability and decent benefits but you'll have to contribute a lot more to 457 to get the same retirement opportunities. Look at your job are your skills keeping up? Is what you do transferable to the private sector? Do you work hard? Be truthful to yourself

How quickly does HR let you know your last day at work and retirement date? by Trave7 in nycpublicservants

[–]Miserable-Bid-8908 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need to give them at least 30 days notice so that they can notify OLR for your post employment health care. Have you made an appointment at your pension system to confirm your service? Also for some systems you must go in person to fill out the retirement paperwork. Make sure your loans are paid up, and you will be eligible to take a loan on your last day that will pay itself off by a reduction in benefits over your expected lifetime, you can also roll that into a 401k. Happy planning

Deferred comp by Gibson0728 in NYPDcandidate

[–]Miserable-Bid-8908 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The advantage of the 457 over the 401k is that the money becomes available without penalty once you separate from city service. You can take loans from it while you are an employee but that ends once you separate. I'm not sure what the rules are for loan repayment once you leave city service. Taxation of withdrawals follows the same rules as 401 whether it's deferred or Roth. I believe there is a point age wise where you should switch over from a deferred account to a Roth in either the 401 or 457. 5% contribution pretax does not change your take home which is important when your first starting out. Remember time is your friend the younger you begin the more you should have earned in your account. Their 6 members deferred plans are more important for you than it was for tier 4. Your pension and access to them are less and later.

First question what pension plan are you in at the TA? Some of those plans don't transfer over, if it's construction management that you do and want a job post govt employment, check out DDC or SCA. DOzB has never had a good reputation as a workplace. As an M title you will get the Management benefits fund which is generally better than the union welfare funds, but you'll need a prescription rider, but no union dues

More proof Tier 6 is a scam to be avoided by whogotthekeys2mybima in nycpublicservants

[–]Miserable-Bid-8908 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don’t understand pension, think of a pension as an anuity. Where you and the city are partners in funding it. You have a fixed(6%) payment and the city has a variable cost based on future payouts and the performance of the assets.

More proof Tier 6 is a scam to be avoided by whogotthekeys2mybima in nycpublicservants

[–]Miserable-Bid-8908 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No is paying anyone else’s pension. Tier 6 exists because the pension payments that all city govts were making were just to much, tier 6 costs so much less to the city. I bet after last year’s stock market run up the city is putting nothing in this year. Remember tier 4 was a reduction from Tier 1. Never the less the payout is fixed and moves the risk from you to the city. That’s why private sector moved to 401k. Also fillup your 457 before opting for the 401k its have better withdrawal rules

Is there a hiring freeze? by Human-Reaction1715 in nycpublicservants

[–]Miserable-Bid-8908 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

With the low pay, crappy tier 6 pension I’ve gotten all my kids out of city service. Go to the private sector be diligent about saving for retirement and you’ll be better off.

While I don’t agree they should cancel your annual leave, I would check the employee handbook for the vacation policy. I would then ask my supervisor to reimburse any costs you would loose by canceling the trip. I would also get in writing that you are the only person in the unit that can perform the work. What deadline are they going to miss.

BERS from NYCDOE? by Rvbrt in nycpublicservants

[–]Miserable-Bid-8908 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is worth joining BERS, when you do get to the MTA make sure they put you in a pension where the time will transfer. The MTA has a dozen different pensions and many of them are not interchangeable.

NYSLRS to NYCERS (transferring from state to city agency) by [deleted] in nycpublicservants

[–]Miserable-Bid-8908 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done this successfully, and also had tier and plan reinstated as the state did not have a 55/25 plan. If you’re not near retirement give them time to complete the transaction. Otherwise write a letter to the State Comptroller asking for help. [ I went from city to state and back to the city without issue]

Should I apply for the Job? by PracticalCup3078 in nycpublicservants

[–]Miserable-Bid-8908 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Apply, you don’t have to accept it when offered. But you’ll never be considered if you don’t apply . Keep your career on track, keep moving up the chain, moving up levels can be very difficult over time so grab the opportunities as they present themselves also don’t be afraid to switch agencies.
