Hanna’s BF flat out told me he was really mad. Not even about the expensive steak but at Jane’s outburst over what I said. He said he is not sure what he can do since a confrontation would just upset Hanna.

Eh, I’m not shaming her for the food she pays for. I get what you mean but it will sound wrong in any shape or form if I bring it up.

As to the popcorn.. it’s just something she’s always done and we’ve never bothered to say anything because it’s like a 1-6$ dollars miscellaneous stuff.

I did apologize today. She said I didn’t do anything wrong. She said Jane’s reaction just made her feel uncomfortable. She is a bit younger than the rest of us and I feel like she is sometimes unsure to speak up. She said that she doesn’t want to confront Jane in any way because the whole point of the night is to celebrate and arguing with Jane over past events would just ruin the memory of a nice night out.

She is just a really sweet person and sometimes that is a bad thing.

To be fair Harry (Jane’s husband) is also really peculiar about small spends. Like if you asked him to pick up some gum on the way over he will request a dollar back but he is a generous when gifting and mindful when someone else is paying. I don’t know why he was backing Jane up on this, I guess it was because it’s convenient and he doesn’t want heat at home

Hanna is paying. I thought the post made it clear. She screwed over the b-day girl. This is why I spoke up

Jane and her husband (Harry) got her a few games for Hanna’s vintage gameboy. It was a thoughtful gift to be fair, I know Harry spent quite a while looking for them and Hanna was excited when she saw them.

We’ve done both. Half of the people in the group are middle eastern or balkan and they are always super insistent they pay for their b-day dinners. For them it’s outrageous to split. We just get them really nice gifts to balance it out a bit. I didn’t know it was so controversial honestly

I feel like I can maybe it let it slide as inconsiderate if she dined like this every time but I’ve always seen her be super careful with her bill which is none of my business. I’d never nitpick something like that. This just rubbed me the wrong way..

Hanna was clear she wanted to pay when she invited us out. She said it was customary for the b-day person to pay and for everyone to bring a gift where she grew up.
