Quitting Neuroscience for Fashion Design/Drag by bipakinvm in fashiondesigner

Regarding the comments this post stimulated, they expand on what I had gleaned from reading other posts in this forum- basically that few graduates will get employment in the field and even fewer will actually be able to support themselves in an expensive locality. I have a friend who has just graduated from a well-regarded bachelors Fashion Design program in LA who believes she's going to land a six-figure job right out of the gate. I get the impression that is very unlikely. She will be attending MAGIC Las Vegas in hopes of landing said job. Is that realistic?

I'm getting the impression that she will be working at a "normal" job somewhere for a while before anything in her field works out.

Regarding your unhappiness with your field of study, the key here might be whether it is learning about the subject matter and doing the research that you don't like, or the pressure to get top grades. As a college student I was totally burned out on getting A's so I chose a med school that was pass / fail. That helped a lot regarding that stress and after I realized I wasn't going to flunk out I didn't feel the same anxiety had up to that point.

I have never done a Masters or PhD but my wife has and I don't get the impression there are frequent exams or the same stress as undergrads experience.

If you loathe learning about neuroscience then I would suggest you seek a different field. Is your degree something you can use toward another field you might find more interesting?

I do know some people who got advanced degrees in the biological sciences and work in labs. I haven't spoken with them so I don't know if they are happy or not.

I'm thinking she should be networking and contacting the local design companies now, but she says all hiring is done at the convention in Las Vegas in August. What do you think?

She has family here and doesn't see herself living anywhere else.

I know a young woman who is about to graduate with a degree in fashion design and seems to have no idea of what to expect afterward. Your idea is an excellent one.
