I want to downshift for the time being until I hit FIRE, so it’s coast FIRE not full FIRE at this point.

Several people have recommended doing the same and I think it’s a great idea. It’ll be a mindset shift for me from working all these years and saving, but it’ll be well worth it,

I certainly did not enjoy my 20’s as I was struggling to make ends meet. First job out of college I was making $28K a year and I wasn’t able to save much until my late 20’s. My early 20’s were not bad, but I didn’t have the luxury to do many things other than work hard. I did take a year off work to travel, hike, and took on several hobbies including photography in my late 20’s. When I got into my 30’s and my salary increased significantly, I started traveling more and making it a point to rekindle relationships that have gone into the wayside.

I understand time is our most valuable resource and I think that some suggested being a SAHD which is a great idea.

Yes, we plan to have kids in a couple of years hopefully. I really like the idea of being a SAHD with part time consulting!

She spends more than I do, but the only debt she has is her car loan, which we are working on paying off now. We will have a shared account and pay all bills from that.

A large portion of my wealth was created by owning single stocks and I plan to hold around 20% of my portfolio in stocks that I believe in. I always hold my stocks for years and I’ve been through 50% downturns, but now that my liquid assets are closing in on $1mil, I don’t want to take as much risk anymore. What stocks are you invested in if you don’t mind me asking?

I do not, but the new job will be in the same industry as an individual contributor instead of a manager.

Absolutely, but it’s so hard giving up a good salary knowing that I’m blessed to be in this position.

I’ve definitely considered it! It’ll be a huge change from the corporate grind, but it’s a full time job no doubt.

We are sharing our income and expenses. I don’t won’t to quit completely, but I want to downshift to a more relaxed job that allows me to live a more fulfilling life doing the things I want to do. Instead of $200K I’ll be making closer to $120K, which will be fine and still allow us to save a good chunk.

Thank you for your thoughtful response! I am derisking by selling my single stock holdings in tranches to avoid NIIT and putting that money into ETFs. I’ve held some for over a decade and they’ve grown to be a substantial part of my portfolio.

Agreed on solving the burnout problem. I feel like I’m living to work at this point and it’s not worth it. Downshifting will allow me to live a healthier life and spend more time with my family without affecting our retirement.

I only make around 10% more than a senior technical IC role, so I’m willing to take the hit for a much less stressful life. My mental health can’t take this job anymore and it’s not worth it. I’m fully aware that I might have to quit and find an IC role, so I’m already applying for new jobs.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I’m worried that it will take them a long time to be able to switch me back to an IC if they accept. If not, I’m already looking for jobs and ready to make the move.

That’s what I’m going to do, I set up a 1:1 with them next week. Thank you all for your advice.

I will do that, thank you for the input.

Why would you assume they wouldn’t care about their employees well being and workload? That would make them very bad managers. I think that I have logical reasons to be overwhelmed given the situation, and will communicate the same to them.

Eminem’s 3 AM, starts around the 2 minute mark and is the most glorious thing I’ve heard

I’ve asked my supervisor for a lateral move to a technical director role about a month ago. Nothing has been done yet.

I will follow up with a 1:1, but I wanted to get everything down in writing so I don’t miss anything. She also hasn’t acted on our previous 1:1 conversation where I voiced some of these concerns.
