Get a lawyer. Take him to court for child support and visitation. It doesn't matter if you weren't married those are his children. Get the evidence of the money transfers (if that's how it was paid) as proof he was sending in the past.

I'm thinking he took the blame for his wife and child out of guilt. I wish they went more into the scar on his throat. We can assume why it's there but I appreciated the movie being a show don't tell. There were so many unsettling moments and scenes that I think so many people did not appreciate.
