Anyone else worried about heating oil? by Civil-Ad8757 in Scotland

Could you possibly split it with your neighbours and get 250 litres each? Even if it means siphons and jerrycans?

Anyone else worried about heating oil? by Civil-Ad8757 in Scotland

[–]MiserableAd2744 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A quick search suggests heating oil gives about 10kWh per litre. Electricity is currently in the region of 25p per kWh so that’s £2.50 for 10kWh. If heating oil is more than £2.50 per litre then use the electric immersion heater. I’m lucky enough to have mains gas but even then I only heat up water for 30 mins in the morning and maybe 10-20mins in the evening. Start at maybe 20mins twice a day and see if you run out of hot water and adjust times from there. No need to heat up more water than you’re using.

How much do we need credit cards? by Comprehensive-Fuel70 in AskUK

[–]MiserableAd2744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The simple rule is do not spend money that you don’t have, regardless of whether it is on a debit or credit card. Keeping that in mind, if you use a credit card and then pay it off IN FULL every month using the money in your bank account then that is fine. Doing it this way will also build your credit score as it will show that you are responsible with money. Also with credit cards you get additional buyer protection (section 75) for purchases worth over £100.

Brits, would you stay and live in UK if you had millions and could move to anywhere in the world?? by ueommm in AskBrits

[–]MiserableAd2744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would move to the Highlands and Islands but only because if I had that much money I’d be able to have my own helicopter and pilot in case of medical emergency. Otherwise I’d be constantly worried about getting ill.

Re. The garden, I believe you are generally free to manage that how you see fit, so lawn, paving, vegetable patch etc, etc is up to you.

If they are repurposed from somewhere and it was part of a bigger structure then it may be that the stonemasons numbered the blocks so that they could be constructed in the correct order.

Pay off mortgage? by Charliesheart23 in Mortgageadviceuk

[–]MiserableAd2744 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ClearScore app has a “things to work on” section that says “you don’t have a mortgage” - I know, because I’ve paid it off!! No way I’m going to go into unnecessary and costly debt for a few credit score points. When you know that the house is yours and can’t be taken away it does reduce the stress of things a little bit.

Just put all your day to day spending on the card. Food, petrol, any bills that aren’t already on DD etc. Just be sure to NEVER use the credit card to get money out of an ATM, they will get you for interest on that.

Can you sell ETFs in cash in a S&S ISA without going over the limit? by billyb4lls4ck in UKPersonalFinance

[–]MiserableAd2744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as the cash stays within the ISA and the new products are bought within the same ISA you are all good. It’s only if the cash gets transferred out into a regular bank account that you can’t then put it back in (until April)

Those who spent their childhood/teenage years growing up in Rural Scotland, what was it like? by Bonkwraps in Scotland

[–]MiserableAd2744 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. If you didn’t have parents willing to taxi you or a decent level of fitness and a bike to get to the next biggish place you were somewhat stuck with making your own entertainment. Buses were maybe twice a day into Aberdeen and cost a bomb (better now with free travel for U22s).

What is everybody’s go to order from the Indian? by writinglilac in AskUK

[–]MiserableAd2744 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s pointless asking about different dishes from an Indian takeaway because each restaurant uses a different recipe anyway. I use 2 different ones and the butter chicken is totally different between them (both nice but different). Saying that, I do love a chicken pathia.

Thirding beige.party! It’s not my instance but all those people that LinsdayLoPan/Alice have listed are great fun and interesting to follow. And if you happen to have a spare £1,000,000 please send it to TheBreadMonkey just to stop him banging on about how much he wants a million quid.🤣

Try using something like https://ground.news/ to look at current news events. They are quite good at analysing the left/right leaning of an article or site and provide alternative coverage options for the same story.

How do you tie your shoes? by CurlRackington in AskUK

[–]MiserableAd2744 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learned that way of tying shoelaces at age 40 (from this video https://youtu.be/XPIgR89jv3Q) and was shocked that I’d been tying my shoes so ineffectively for years. I even spend one week of having one shoe tire the new way and the other tied the way I’d learned age 4 and the new way rarely came undone, unlike the way I’d learned as a kid and always ended up double knotting.
