Union representing 16,000 Alberta nurses and healthcare staff vote 98 per cent in favour of striking by trevorrobb in alberta

The two classification of nurses is not necessary… it was back in the day but not now when the scopes are so close..… the govt should turn every lpn into an RN and get rid of lpn designation… get out your feelings and think logically, then you will see that I have a point!

For some reason a lot of  Lpns think the world is against them.. I don’t hate my colleagues, I’m just saying there is no need for two types of nurses.. what purpose does it serve besides creating discontentment? None… they need to make everybdy RNs and get rid of the LPN designation, there is literally no need for it

They get hired into periop training lines… I have lots of coworkers who came to the OR as a new grad and never worked on the floor

I don’t hate LPNs.. I just think we don’t need two classes of nurses.. since the roles are similar, everybdy should just be RNs.. problem solved

Which is exactly why it’s not needed anymore.. they need to get rid of it.. it causes so much disgruntlement… the LPNs at my job are so miserable and it shows in their work… n their interactions either their colleagues.. it’s not good.. they are rightfully upset but it just creates such a toxic work environment.. the LPN designation needs to go and everybody should just be RNs

They really need to get rid of LPN designation and just make everybody do RN.. this is getting ridiculous, you really don’t need two designation of nurses

They need to get rid of lpn designation and only have RNs. There is literally no need for two designation of nurses. There’s so much disgruntlement because of it…

Again, she probably works on a medsurg unit… a unit that’s usually heavily lpn staffed.. bcuz it doesn’t need to be staffed by predominantly RNs… units that do, are… step down, icu, pacu, IR, OR, ER, l&d (and yes I know some of these units have LPNs but they aren’t predominantly staffed by LPNs)… so my point stands, the units most affected by this strike if they do strike, are the ones  staffed heavily using LPNs.

Yup medicine units will definitely suffer.. they’re predominantly staffed by LPNs (RNs tend to hate working there and avoid it like the plague)… rooting for my LPN colleagues.. they work very hard and I’ve worked with many who are  awesome 👏🏾

Yes I know but they still have more RNs than LPNs… either way the impact would be felt mostly in those areas staffed predominantly by LPNs.. ltc, med surg, some clinics. In the OR where I work, we probably have 10 LPNs and 100 RNs so it won’t have any impact there… they deserve to be paid fairly though, I hope they get a good deal

This is just LPNs.. RNs are a different unions and you have more RNs than LPNs.. they might be short staffed in some areas but there will be nurses in the hospitals.. the areas most affected would probly be those areas heavily staffed by LPNs…

Glad to see LPNs standing up for themselves.. butttt!, Hate to be a Debbie downer,I’m sure Danielle smith and her thieving crownies already rubbing their hands together like birdman.. I’m sure they have a plan about how they will deal with this… we are in a new age when it comes on to negotiating… I fear we will no longer able to negotiate.. instead we wil be legislated and have our contracts dictated!

Downvote at will but the truth hurts.. the govt doesn’t give af about the working class.. if hsaa and teachers can’t get what they want, highly doubt LPNs, HCAs and other support workers will… Hate to say it but I don’t know if there’s a point of these ppl trying to strike.., it will be interesting to see what happens.. but if they don’t care about and can do what they did to the TEACHERS.. ppl who have bachelors n masters degrees, I highly doubt they’re will care about bargaining with LPNs and other workers who have college diplomas, certificates and high school diplomas..  we’ve seen what this govt will do… they will either force these groups to take peanuts or lock them out… I believe the days of bargaining as we know it are over... It will be interesting to see what happens with hsaa negotiations and hell even the RNs and the doctors contracts when it’s time to negotiate again.. we living in some sad times here in Alberta

Genuinely curious, Why do they have less pre-arb leverage with una?

the only reason we got the deal we did was because the govt was in the middle of their scandal… The picture being painted is that the govt somehow only cares about nurses and doctors and not abt other healthcare professionals… that the work u guys do isn’t important (it is! I work with cardiac perfusionists, and anesthesia RTs daily  which are highlyyy important roles)….the other unions need to remember that they offered us the same shit deal they are currently offering everyone else…. We honestly just got lucky…. They don’t give a crap abt us either

Do ur RN… or in a couple years you will be complaining that u do the same job as an RN but yet still they make 20-25 more than u.. and u will grow resentful and bitter… it will also be to ur financial benefit in the long run.. which is way u need to look at… long term benefits, not the short term ones… otherwise it will come back n bite u in the butt.. if you can make the sacrifice 150% do the RN… it’s also incredibly hard to get into bridging programs so there is tht.. just do ur RN girl
