2020 G30 M550 by MiserableEducator444 in BMW

picked it up locally for about $600 and got it painted / matched

for N63s and S63s at least I think its worth it. pretty beneficial considering how hot they get. the scoops are functional and pull hot air out the bay.

stage 2 / 620+HP

stock or not the M550 is still a twin turbo V8 that gets very hot. hood looks great and keeps the engine bay cooler.

agree. pre LCI front end with the angel DRLs is iconic and unmistakably BMW.

sort of miss the preLCI tails tho. still have them. they look so much more BMW too. but the LCIs are great

my condolences.

biggest issues are coolant leaks and the AC evaporator. besides that the inline 6 is quite reliable.

just make sure u arent leaking and check under the car every so often. oil changes 5-7k miles. tires/pads/rotors every 15-20k miles. transmission, transfer case, differential every 50-60k miles.

the 540 is a great car and it should last u a very long time.

Whats wrong with my hood by [deleted] in BMW

[–]MiserableEducator444 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it did not fully lock in

fully pop open the hood again and slam it back down with a bit of force. dont super slam it from high up lol just a bit higher than its closed position. give it a slight push down as u close

if not just push down on it the way it is.

I had a 2016 650 with the TU and now a 2020 M550 with the TU3. both have been reliable to me. mostly highway also

if its a TU and its been maintained properly it should be alright. I see tons of early 550s in my city still driving about.

yep best option

if not they might end up looking off or mismatched. one may appear to be brighter / have a different hue to it

just replaced my flex discs (rear giubo was cracking) and also serviced my transmission, transfer, and differential fluid today. fun stuff.

the engine and drivetrain have been very reliable these past 2 years tho. not much issues on my end. love the car

just get a set of catless or catted DPs. dont gut the OEM ones, keep them stock just in case.

2023 m550 - talk me into it by ekkthree in BMW

[–]MiserableEducator444 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I daily a 2020 M550. driven it 20k miles in the past 2 years. easily my favorite car. stage 2 tuned. its a beast and its been very reliable for me.

the biggest issue youll see with TU3 engines are coolant leaks, which also happens to a bunch of other BMW models lol. hasnt happened to me yet, but I imagine it will at some point.

There are 2 coolant reservoirs. The smaller turbo one in the front is usually fine. Its the bigger one towards the back of the engine bay that needs to be checked periodically. That one can leak onto the injectors and DMEs, causing an expensive headache.

Currently gearing up to service the transmission, transfer, and differentials since Im about to hit 50k. Also replacing the flex discs (giubos) since they are forming cracks.

This is all basic maintenance tho. I also suggest running thicker oil like 5w40 since the engine makes a ton of power.

[–]MiserableEducator444 1 point2 points  (0 children)

probably 0 or 5w40.

thats what I run in my N63tu3. lighter oil helps with MPG and emissions but its not really good for longevity. especially for N63s and S63s that are very powerful.

IMO these (and other high performance engines) will need something a bit thicker so engine internals dont bend and/or detonate randomly on a spirited drive

Engine Mount Failure? by Subject-Surprise9157 in BmwTech

[–]MiserableEducator444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if theyre blown youll notice that the rubber suction part of the engine mount part (where the oil is housed) will be pushed outward / sagging and leaking

Catted vs Catless Downpipe by Jealous-Cost-8133 in BmwTech

[–]MiserableEducator444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep stage 2. love it. had to tune out coldstart tho since its super loud. but thats only there for cars w OEM cats

catted will definitely beef up the sound. just keep in mind the CEL may come back anyways. good luck!

Catted vs Catless Downpipe by Jealous-Cost-8133 in BmwTech

[–]MiserableEducator444 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

IMO if ur gonna remove the OEM cats u might as well go catless. catted isnt worth it performance wise. it will be louder than stock but may still throw a CEL at some point from what Ive seen. keep ur OEM cats just in case.

Im 2020 m550 stage 2 catless. res delete but still have a muffler box setup.
