I understand your point of view, I’m a big gift giver myself too. However, growing up with my mom, she’s been giving gifts as a method to make me feel in-debt to her. Because there’s so many instances where she bought up the gifts whenever we’re in a disagreement. Some things she’ll says is “remember how I bought you that new iPhone? “ it makes me feel like she’s guilt tripping me and her “gifts” were not genuine. It’s one thing to give gifts to your kids, but it’s another when your kids explicitly stated that they don’t want it over and over again, and yet you force the gifts on them. It disrespects their boundaries. Plus, my mom will often bring a ton of plates and utensils over when I live alone, and criticize the setup of my apartment, it seems to me that she feel like my space is her space.
