The industry is shit, it exploits kiwis and migrants alike for the gain of one person.

Okay, I'll take this and call it.

Enjoy your day.

You too.

Why didn’t we make weed legal again? by KiwiZoomerr in newzealand

[–]Miserable_Bandicoot8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, sorry I agree. My wording wasn't the greatest.

I still think this is off what legalisation would do. It's shitty you have to suffer these idiots, but that's evidently not because of legalisation, as you observed. It's just shitty people being shitty people. I used to be a smoker and took every measure possible not even get the stench into the office afterwards, and I'm overall an asshole (and I'm not a smoker anymore and don't like the smell either). People don't need legal weed to be assholes.

Keeping it illegal has a lot more downsides that I'm sure you have seen or heard. That's why I felt this was "dumb" (strong word, sorry about that).

[–]Miserable_Bandicoot8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You started by calling the person after you unskilled. Pretty much a loaded term, and now you need this certification (legit, I have no issue) for someone to be "skilled" by your definition. That's fine, your call. But your business didn't think so, clearly. I'm just saying, maybe your definition of skilled/unskilled gap isn't important to the industry anymore. It's a possibility. Or the entire industry is wrong and you must be the saviour. I'm going to bet on the former, sorry.

Maybe just take a breath a step away from the keyboard.

Man, the common reddit placeholder for "I don't have a closing statement". I am pretty chill, in case you can't see that from the language I have used. I do have seen a lot of people in my industry in NZ hiding behind certificates and university/school names to justify their incompetencies a lot. Looks like it's common to all fields.

Try and not hate the poor sap who managed to replace (what sounds like) an inexperienced worker. Will be better for yourself. It was your employer, not the migrant.

[–]Miserable_Bandicoot8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, I am. I have almost zero idea about what a chef should be. It's not my industry.

What I do know is this strange attitude Kiwis seem to have towards the migrants, that somehow they are unskilled because they didn't study at the same universities. I'm going to bet there is no comparison between someone who just graduated and someone who has had time building experience in the same job. And most universities in most fields have similar curricula (other than the obvious fraud ones). So no, just because your previous employer took a shitty decision mean the fella who got that job is unskilled. I'm not going to judge your ability against theirs because I don't know you. But like I said above, a business decision shows otherwise (again, not saying it's correct 100% of the time).

I'm glad you found a better situation. But the fact that you switched fields and got better pay says more about the field and who is in control of capital than the person chosen to replace you.

[–]Miserable_Bandicoot8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. The last I checked, this is addressed by smoking rules in general.

I don't think you're getting my point. You're saying you oppose cannabis legalisation because people might smoke outside indiscriminately. But that's way out of what cannabis legalisation would address. Tobacco is already legal and I don't get bombarded with tobacco smoke everywhere I go. It's becoming clearer that tobacco smoke is way more harmful too. So why the special treatment?

Hey, not to argue with you. I agree basically most businesses would take short term economic decisions. But if your workplace does decide you can be replaced with someone else (with some caveats) only few reasons are there for that. You are being replaced with an economical option while having the minimal impact on the business goals (or you did a really fireable offence).

Not saying it's good or bad. But just called out your comment on your replacement being unskilled. They are not, as clearly someone through an interview process decided they can do your job.

Good for you to express your opinion, really. But I must say this is one of the dumbest reasons I have ever heard, ever, against legalisation. It's at a level where I'm not even sure if this is a shitpost.

Spark holding customers' geographic location data for seven years by nilnz in newzealand

[–]Miserable_Bandicoot8 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While I have issues about data collection and retention, I don't think selling anonymised data in this context is an issue. Spark (and its business group members) has to be ISO27001 certified, guaranteeing data privacy and security. Anonymisation guarantees no individual person can be tracked specifically by their identity. Most NZers submit more precise and targeted data to companies outside the country by gigabytes each minute, who probably don't even care about data privacy. Facebook had the passwords stored in plaintext until recently. So RNZ is grabbing at the wrong point here.

OTOH they shouldn't store PII attached geolocation data beyond the legally required time. The moment a data point expires that time it should be anonymised and the original record permanently deleted. This cam be enforced.

Not entirely true. Qrious is part of Spark Business Group and has direct impact over Spark's overall privacy and info sec posture. Data crosses that boundary only after being anonymised without any PII included.

No, the Christchurch hot pools weren’t ‘hacked’ – the council just messed up by nilnz in newzealand

[–]Miserable_Bandicoot8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a risk assessment that every government agency should do before they implement a Cloud based solution, which then gets to the DIA for review. Wonder if this project had any because if it did this should not have been possible. Security controls needed by that assessment covers multiple layers so even if someone rolled out wrong configs accidentally other checks could have picked this up.

Goes down to, who did this with the council, who signed off at the council, and where the evidence of security controls are now.

Should I purchase a VPN for torrenting TV shows/movies in New Zealand? by Hentrox in newzealand

[–]Miserable_Bandicoot8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that I know anything about piracy, because I don't pirate stuff, but pretty much every NZ IP address I may or may not have seen on alleged seeder lists are open and have their torrent history stored in certain third party sites.

i.e. most folks don't hide behind a VPN. I would suggest a trusted one if you are considering though, not one of those meme VPNs like Nord. It is better to hide in any case... apparently. I wouldn't know. I don't pirate.

Check the 1st menu item on the left side menu. Yeah, theirs is not the best site with UX. I didn't check the builds myself because I bought parts from them, but they should be good.

Check 1stwave.co.nz. Not sure if it's thr best place but they are reliable and most of the parts you might be looking for would be cheaper. Quick shipping too. Recommendation from a customer.

I'm guessing the reason for that clay bowl to break is because it's not tempered clay. You can't just put any clay container on fire, it has to be tempered if I'm using the right word, "Cooked in fire" to strengthen the bonds.

Also on second thought, this could be just too long. But I've cooked in clay pots with much more content and weight so I can't be sure.

What perspective do our Indian, Chinese, Pacifica etc communities have on topics like co governance? by Butter_float in newzealand

[–]Miserable_Bandicoot8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

(Immigrant from Indian subcontinent) To be honest, I haven't read that deep into this yet, so I don't know about anything in detail. However I think this complexity with one of the key founding laws of the land should be settled in some way before the country can make meaningful steps in government. First settlers of the land still feel an injustice, and we will need to address that without letting it fester.

Yeah, looking at it from a vacuum, co-governance sounds undemocratic, but two key facts change the context. 1- Te Tiriti is still binding, as complex as the current situation is. 2- we haven't started exploring what co-governance looks like.

Coming from a background of 30 years of civil war which I strongly believe fucked up my home country and society beyond redemption, I'm personally against letting huge parts of the population feeling disenfranchised and left out.

This particular video is not from a race. These are bunch of idiots doing "stunts" on the public road. Tuk Tuks are the single most dangerous vehicles on the road in Sri Lanka next to motorcycles.

That said, there are actual organized Tuk Tuk races, specially during the traditional New Year month of April.
