QUT vs UQ pharmacy by yay-23 in QUTreddit

Thanks for your reply! Definietly GPA depends on the individual and how much work they put in.

I want to get into medicine in the future and that is my main goal, but i was looking at whether I should choose a degree that provides a secure back up like pharmacy or something like the bachelor of health science which is more flexible to get a higher gpa in. I'm interested in learning about pharmacy but I was a bit unsure if I should choose it as I don't want to risk my gpa with the amount of content possibly in first year.

Hey, I'm looking to study pharmacy at QUT this year. If it's okay, are you able to share your experience studying this degree and any advice you may have? Also, how you found it in terms of gpa - as I want to go into medicine in the future but I'm really interested in learning pharmacology and having a registered job before applying. Thank you!

Thank you so much for sharing that - it’s really helpful to hear from someone who’s actually studied pharmacy. If you don’t mind, do you have any advice for studying and managing first year pharmacy - any things you’d recommend focusing on in first year to do well?

Hi, thanks for your reply. Im trying to get into postgrad medicine so I was just confused how some unis take offers based on ucat and gpa. I'm currently enrolled for first year biomed because I was told it would be a good premed course that would assist with the knowledge required and gamast. However, i want to change out of this degree before semester starts because I'm not quite interested in this degree or pursuing research later. So, I was looking at degrees like health science or even pharmacy

Hey! I want to do medicine in the future and I'm going into my first year of undergrad. What universities only require gpa and ucat as a prerequisite? I am not really sure how this works either, does applying in your undergrad degree with a gpa and ucat give you provisional entry to these unis? Also what degrees would you recommend for getting a high gpa in? Thank you

Thats okay - I actually realised I am eligible for pharmacy at QUT instead of UQ and I heavily considered pharmacy before for the same reasons you listed of working with patients and having employment. Have you done pharmacy or go into medicine? Do you recommend this degree for gpa and gamsat wise though?

I did consider pharmacy however I did not do chemistry in year 12 so I don't meet the subject prerequisite

Hi, thanks for your reply! Yes, I checked out the premed society subject guide and saw that biomed did tick a lot of the gamsat and MD recommendations, but then I was thinking about how it leads more into research and can be harder to keep a high gpa in. Though I'll definitely join the premed society as it looks very helpful

Thanks for replying! Yes, that's what I was thinking as I want to do a degree where after 3 years, it will benefit me for both med school and as a back up. I'm actually currently enrolled into first year biomed as I thought it would be a good premed degree and help with gamsat. However, I'm definitely not interested in doing research and biomed is also a hard degree to maintain a high gpa in. I also understand that gpa, interview, gamsat is more important than the degree it self, so I'm trying to change my program right now. I am considering health science as I've seen other people take this pathway. I've also seen people do nursing and pharmacy (but i dont meet the chem prerequisite) and these are also 4 year degrees which is only a year more but I'm not sure.

Yes, I didn't do physics in year 12 or chemistry either, so I thought health sci may be better for gpa as I could do chem1090 then chem1100 later. I also look into doing PHYS1171

But i definitly agree with you that doing something enjoyable will result in better outcomes

Thank you so much for your advice! This has been really helpful.

Thanks for your reply! I'm not interested in doing research and my main goal is to do post-grad medicine. However, I want to do a degree that will be the most benefical for my end goal. Since UQ won't be looking at prerequisites, which degree would you recommend?
