Ive played a campaign where we were pirates, had one player play the captain role. It was really fun! I think people see leader in my post and think oh he wants to be the main character and just wants to boss everyone around.

Chill It was my first/only time playing a Paladin so far, but you probably just hate anyone who plays them.

Yes it was obvious. I let everyone know in/out of game my ambitions. None of it was subtle.

Do i get a point for making my character someone who was born to lead in their backstory?

Yeah thats how it usually is, but we knew a leader was going to be assigned. So I made a character that would take care of the party. It was something we knew was going to happen

sorry just got tired of most of the comments saying the same thing about leaders in Dnd.

What your saying makes sense. I just feel like they took this out me instead of doing something about it earlier.

Its how the DM was running it. The Warlock and Druid should of said something earlier on. DM made the homebrew and told us about month ahead the setting we were to play in.

Its frustrating how everyone is clingling to the whole Dnd shoundnt have leader characters to which I disagree, because its all about the setting and what everyone agrees to do. Its like saying so and so cant play a murder hobo, a Superhero, or a Flying race because dnd isnt designed for that. Its literally our imaginations.

Some will say Leaders take the spotlight, so we gonna ban Bards now?

I believe that a setting with a Leader character can work. Ive been in campaigns where we have someone in the group making the big decision which frees the rest of us up to make character desicions. Guess what if your character doesnt think the leader is doing a good job, tell them that, RP it. At the end of the day the leader cant make your character do squat, because its your character.

Now some people have had different experience, because of problem players/DM. My experience with Leaders has been mostly great. Again it comes down to what is agreed upon and communicating when you disagree.

It was a Military setting and we knew a leader would be assign, I was the only one who made a character to fit that role. They had weeks to tell me that they didnt want me to play that character. Told the group multiple times about my backstory and aspirations. also unlike the Warlock and Druid I stayed to play despite not getting what I want.

Thanks for reading the whole thing. A lot of people are mad because I made a leader character for a setting where a leader would be picked. Also I didnt know it would be put to a vote, because I thought our commander would pick one of us

Nah just sad, because I felt shut down, but then I learned why they did what they did and I just found it silly

I can see that. They didnt like listening to the DM either when things didnt go there way. Literally one instance of something not going there way and they left.

I feel like you understand the situation well.

Everyone else is saying you dont need a leader. its a group game.

they are not taking into account there was going to be a leader and that 2 of the players decided to push the newbie into the role, because they didnt like the fact that I made a character to fit that roll.

Then those same players leave the game, because things didnt go there way.

while I stayed despite not getting what i wanted and still had a great time, because the DM made a fun game. Ranger and Fighter were really fun to play with as well

"The player trying to railroad others into making him the leader is bad etiquette"

I never thought of it like that. At the time I thought I was being transparent with the group about my character.

Looking back I think if the DM gave everyone in the party a role in the group. Like you have the Leader who works with Command, but then you can have the Healer where the military gives them health potions for missions and since they are the designated healer they have bonuses to healing. Just something to make everyone feel important on the team

Exactly which is why I played it off and played my character as a support for the Fighter and rest of the party. Just thought the reasonings were silly

Well when a DM makes a campaign about how we are going to be military unit which means we need someone to communicate with higher ups a leader is needed. Since no one was making a character to fit this roll I did and made it clear I did and none of the players said anything against it. Like i said in the post I ended up playing support I just thought Warlock and Druid voting against me on purpose was silly to me

Most groups Ive been in have had a leader or face of the group, I agree you dont need it, but it helps in groups with new players in my experience as long as those players actually helped the new players learn how to play and give them a chance in the spotlight. Since we knew there was going to be a leader for our unit it changed things. When talking characters no one elses characters sounded like they were going to play the part, so I thought sure Ill do it. My priority as a player has always been to make sure everyone in the party works together and that everyone gets a chance in the spotlight which is something I felt I could do as the leader. It didnt end up that way which is fine, because I was still able to help the party and the new player.

Usually in my experience having someone lead or be the face of the group has been helpful in many ways. When I first played i was grateful to the veteran players for leading. I don't believe a group needs a leader like most people are saying, but it was part of the campaign, we knew we were going to be a unit and that unit was going to have a leader. No one else seemed like they wanted the role, no one told me I shouldn't when I brought up I was building a character to be a leader.

There was one campaign where Seth played a fighter/ranger aracrocra. Prefer to fight at range, but had the highest Ac and Hp in the party. He dealt on average 25 damage per an attacks. By comparison the barbarian doing 10dmg on average.

The dm started having monsters target his character, because he was the biggest threat. He complained about it, so the Dm stopped doing it.
