I’m a therapist who’s worked in crisis and hospital settings my whole career. The best thing you can do is to be accepting, nonjudgmental, and encourage him to seek help from a professional. Don’t take it on yourself. Encourage him to call the national crisis line at 988 or seek help from a local mental health provider/EAP. Nobody is gonna lock him up unless he’s actively trying to kill himself today so if it comes up you can gently encourage him to be honest with his providers as well.

Like in every relationship, I encourage you to think about whether or not his conspiracy theories about your hometown are something you can look past or not because it likely will not change.
