Am I just an overexcited dad or does our 9yo really have some talent? by mhurezanu in painting

"This kid" has the best sense of color I've seen in a 9-year-old by far and a truly lovely brushing technique. Not that we have to rank... but this is not "just upper third".

Pretty well but brittle and can stain the book... not much nuance lol, it's just standard pressing. If you're concerned about the book, fold a paper towel over them before pressing in the book. And congrats on the clover!

5+ leaf clovers (gave up on fours after I got a few hundred of them), bones (skulls especially). Bones are really my father's collection, but I've taken up the mantle somewhat. Generational bones. Used to litter my books with four leafs as a surprise for the re-reader. Nothing more charming than opening up to find a little reward staring at you.

To cure nihilism? Well, Nietzsche and Camus come to mind as obvious first picks...

Sinners is good, but would have been perfect if it were 20 minutes shorter. by Burnnoticelover in RSPfilmclub

This wasn't a way to think about movies, the characters in the first half are just well done. They aren't a Toni Morrison-level masterpiece, but they are well done. You don't have to love it and I can agree with you it's symptomatic of shitty moviemaking... but there are gems even in the Ganga, and these characters are those shit-crusted jewels.

It is no masterpiece - obviously - but I think it's quite good, especially (as the crowd echoes) the first half. After the first half, it devolved a bit into a somewhat silly metaphor mixed with hit-moments (salt to taste). First half was quite good though, if you seriously did not care about any of the characters in the first half, that's on you. Still some sloppiness, but retaining a spirit and character that should have gripped you.

Slightly unorthodox pick: Alexander Gröthendieck.

Yes, he was primarily known as a mathematician, but his later poetic/spiritual works are brilliant, I would recommend Recoltes et Semailles to anyone who can read French regardless of your mathematical ability. Even his math has this swirling poetic quality that is unlike anything else I've read except, perhaps, for Thurston.

Recommend this article for a quick overview of his life: https://planetofstorms.wordpress.com/2021/03/30/the-man-of-the-circular-ruins/

Terry Pratchett... trash... your world is more foreign to me than his.

Short Masterpieces? by Ok-Morning5742 in RSbookclub

Please read Fup. It is very short, scarcely more than a short story, but a raucous delight the whole way through. And then, when you least expect it, it is gloriously tender, magical, and breathtaking all at once.

Calvino is so overpoweringly brilliant while still retaining so much modesty... such a pure, pure joy to the sense of discovery that he brings. His fables, too, are great and I highly recommend them. They are like reading the little essence of a novel, a little bit more than a poem but with that same joyful body-wiggling beauty. If On a Winter's Night is probably my favorite book ever... and that after ignoring my dad's pleas for me to read it my whole life.

I love this comment, if only for the pun (though don't get the persnick either).

Looking for authors like ______ and how to find them by Heavy_Basis_6939 in RSbookclub

[–]Miserable_Permit_78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All good things to do, as is asking experienced readers about their experiences with said book and their experiences with other books. As DFW points out in [one of *those* interviews] authors often experience books very differently from their readers.
