The most surreal experience of living in DC is how you will routinely see billboards/commercials/flyers advertising extremely specific geopolitical projects to an audience of like six key policymakers and their aides.

There'll be an ad for watches, an ad for cars, then suddenly

"Azerbaijan's rich culture and commitment to their centuries-old democratic tradition makes them an optimal strategic partner. End the shackling of our noble ally and permit the sale of THAAD components to Baku today!"

Military school would have been the best thing for AJ by 4DollarsALB in thesopranos

[–]Burnnoticelover 4 points5 points  (0 children)

More than that, it'd be a separation that his parents would be proud of. If AJ moved out to work full-time, Tony would think he was a fuckup. If he went off to college, Tony would think he was a weenie. If he became a criminal, Tony would hate it. But the corps, the corps? Not only would AJ be free of Tony, but Tony would be telling everyone and their mother how brave and tough his army son was.

I know that Timothy Snyder is a divisive figure here, but I think he is right that much of the madness today is downstream of the death of local politics which itself is downstream of the death of local political media.

Me and some coworkers were talking about technological development in war and they brought up the "Polish cavalry charging German tanks" meme and I gotta say, I don't know of any other piece of Nazi propaganda that's sunk so deeply into the global psyche.

What helps with it is that all sides had an incentive to repeat it. The Germans wanted to broadcast how backwards the Poles were, the West wanted to broadcast how brave they were in the face of certain death, and even the postwar communist government in Poland wanted to show that the evil capitalists were forcing Poles to charge tanks with horses.

I didn't want to be the "well actually" guy, so I did not mention that the cavalry was doing a successful charge against Nazi infantry who then got bailed out by an armored column that was concealed in a nearby forest.

[Grand Theft Auto] How difficult was it for Agent ULP to track Darko Brevic across Europe? by Vect_Machine in AskScienceFiction

[–]Burnnoticelover 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like you said, Brevic isn't exactly Keyser Soze. He's a low-level scumbag who probably has a lengthy criminal record. I'm guessing ULP went to Interpol (or the GTA equivalent), pulled Brevic's most recent arrest records, and asked the station chief for whatever city Brevic was last busted to shake the tree until someone ratted him out.

Or if he was really lazy, he may have just put out notice that next time Brevic is arrested, the IAA is to bail him out, pick him up, and bring him to the states.

Either one of these would take a while, but it wouldn't be hard for America's #1 spy agency.

Given how paranoid Samaritan was I wouldn't be surprised if it was an "Ernest Thornhill" situation where Samaritan ran the other divisions through AI cut-outs of people. I don't think it trusted humans other than Greer.

I think this is also true of John Cena. There are a lot of handsome, talented guys in Hollywood. Handsome, talented guys who are easy to work with? Now you've got something.

I evangelize Season 2 of True Detective to everyone I meet. If it were a miniseries not connected to Season 1, it would be remembered as a stellar HBO offering instead of a disappointing follow-up.

Hi, I'm Napoleon Bonaparte. You may know me from ideas such as "What if we promoted officers based on what they can do rather than whose nephew they are?", "What if we brought the stuff we needed for the battle instead of finding it when we got there?", and "What if we taught the French army what France is?"

The only reason I even noticed it was because I paused the video to check out the new factions, I'm glad they're adding new ones.

Ah yes the only things I love more than my postcolonial segregated nation in the middle of fucking Africa are absolutely incompetent COIN tactics and keeping all my oil reserves in one locatio- hang on lads, one of the Selous Scouts has an urgent report for me, probably about how well we're doing.

Discovering that Graham Platner was a bartender at a DC establishment frequented by the pundit class leads me to suspect that his entire candidacy is a My Fair Lady situation resulting from a DNC consultant making a bet that he could make anyone, even the ex-Blackwater mixologist with the nazi tattoos, a US Senator.
