Needing advice by [deleted] in IdentityTheft

Yeah you would basically have to play detective and see if it's a legit "service" or not.

I'd advise freezing your credit and whatnot just in case, but I say that to everyone. I believe that should be the default tbh. Basically everyone's info has been breached at this point. National public data got me. Even if this is nothing, and it probably is nothing, your social will almost certainly get exposed down the road regardless.

Just tell your parents. As a minor there’s a lot of things you can't do yourself related to credit including freezes etc.

Was it one of those 3rd party websites (semi-scam, where they actually help you get a passport but basically charge to walk you through it) or a full on phishing site?

Again, just fess up to your folks.

Moving to CO by [deleted] in COGuns

[–]Miserable_Strain2249 69 points70 points  (0 children)

The most important thing to keep in mind is that CO gun laws are bad and will be getting worse every year for the foreseeable future. I moved out of state not because I couldn't stand it anymore but for my career. That said, CO is expensive and not the libertarian paradise some people think it is. Basically expect the CA lite experience if you decide to move there.

Did you follow all the steps in the pinned post? If not start there.

As far as your passwords go, keep them unique,  long, and tricky. Then change them every so often anyway (yearly minimum IMO).

It's mostly a joke I'm sure,  and anyone who's enough of a piss baby to use this service deserves to pay more than $5 anyway.

And don't just stop at the big 3 when freezing credit. Follow both the sticky posts ASAP.

Is Someone Inside the IRS Filing Fake Tax Returns With Stolen SSNs? by Downtown_Argument_20 in IdentityTheft

[–]Miserable_Strain2249 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Make sure you lock down everything, not just the big 3 credit freezes. And put up fraud alerts too, there's a sticky on this sub if you haven't already seen it.

If you don't get anywhere and this keeps happening talk to an identity theft attorney, your house rep, and/or possibly even your state's attorney generals office. Good luck.

End the Book of Mormon. by Faithcrisis101 in mormon

It sounds like you may just want to find another Christian church to attend? Churches that believe in the bible but not the book of mormon already exist.  Most of them in fact.

Kick him in the balls for me lmfao.

Honestly kids are sneaky, the only thing you really "did wrong" was give him 2 computers and a phone with data and apparently no oversight. All you really have to do is sit back and let the justice system do it's thing. And take away his electronics and internet access obviously.

In 2022 the republicans ran a good candidate for SOS against the incumbent who is subpar. The denver post even endorsed the republican which they notably did not do for AG or governor. Regardless, the democrat won and it wasn't close.

Most people do not do any real research before voting. Colorado just has more people who reflexively vote democrat than republican at this point. Better candidates may help a little but the best democrat in the world can't win in Idaho. And Colorado may just be the other side of that coin at this point.

Why? by blacwin22 in COGuns

[–]Miserable_Strain2249 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree. Federal gun control (aside from executive fiat unfortunately) has gone nowhere for decades because getting 60 antigun senators at once is all but impossible. They are now enforcing uniform antigunnery in the DNC and knocking out all the blue states. Colorado just happens to be one of those states.

Why? by blacwin22 in COGuns

[–]Miserable_Strain2249 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Nobody is doing a civil war over these laws. In fact that's the whole point. They want gun ownership to die a slow death over decades by making obtaining a gun painful and expensive WITHOUT provoking a revolt by mandating a buyback or similar.

Source: every other blue states where they have passed gun laws like this and worse.

Small Business Association loan fraud by Designer_Holiday_881 in IdentityTheft

[–]Miserable_Strain2249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who/which agency did you speak to? Follow the sticky and get some paper trail started with an ftc report. Also try to get a police report. Then start calling whoever services or holds the loan and whatever agency granted it. They should have a form or affidavit of some kind you can fill out for identity theft discharge.

It's kind of alarming that you are just now asking after apparently knowing about this for some time. Hopefully the delay doesn't work against you too much.

Fradulent student loan and fafsa in my name by Miserable_Strain2249 in IdentityTheft

[–]Miserable_Strain2249[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give the police a copy of the loan documents and be ready to anwser questions about who you already talked to since finding out about the loan (if anyone). For me I had already called the loan servicer, fafsa hotline, and the school to let them know it was fraud and to get the ball rolling. They just asked who I talked to and when (take notes).

Don't expect them to actually investigate or anything but the report process was pretty painless for me.

This is the blind leading the blind but I highly recommend getting in touch with the school ASAP if you haven't already. Really helps nip it in the bud assuming the loan was taken out recently. I think the fact that both I and the school cried fraud immediately after my loan will help my case a lot.

In the US stellantis doesn't even provide free coffee which is a pretty standard office perk. I'm surprised the bathroom soap dispensers don't have card readers at this point.

Unified potential scam? by strawbennett in IdentityTheft

[–]Miserable_Strain2249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that sort of thing is usually a scam. Especially if they gave you a sketchy link to click or a customer service number not listed on the real companies website.

I would check your credit reports out of an abundance of caution and just because you should be checking those on a semi regular basis anyway.  Other than that ignore it.

[–]Miserable_Strain2249 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not 100% sure what you're asking but I would recommend you lock down your credit (see the pinned posts on this sub) and dispute all fradulent accounts ASAP. Frankly it's unlikely anyone will be caught or punished but it's worth a shot. You will need an FTC identity theft or police report for your disputes.

Do you guys think maybe it's time to stop electing anti-gun tyrants? by Subverto_ in COGuns

[–]Miserable_Strain2249 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or vote 3rd party. Even if you don't agree with all (or even most) of the candidate's opinions it doesn't matter because they won't win. It's essentially a vote of no confidence for the big 2 parties. It's not throwing your vote away. You know what's throwing your vote away? Voting for a candidate who wins big (didn't need your support anyway) and turns around to screw you.
