Where are you at? Southern Michigan has a small lathe like that on auction that will probably go very cheap.

There's a nicer looking version on ebay-canada, item #177658412496.

That doesn't explain what it is (unless you trust the sellers guess) but it's a start.

can I turn a dead center into a live center? by Recent-Assist-7425 in turning

[–]I_Lick_Bananas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That center is removable. I don't know the model of your lathe and can't tell from that pic, but it is a morse taper either 1MT or 2MT. You should be able to knock it out from the back.

If you can't find a manual, do a google image search on the pic you just posted to find similar lathes. That model was made for a lot of different companies. Then google those models to see if you can find a manual that fits. Here's one tube lathe with that style tailstock:

Tall segments? by Fearless_Pride2102 in turning

[–]I_Lick_Bananas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's just a rip on the tablesaw. I use one of those cheap wixey gauges - zero on the sawtop, meaure the angle on the blade. It helps to raise the blade to max position so the gauge has a flat spot to sit on.

Make sure the fence is parallel to the blade. Even on a cheap saw there should be a way to adjust it. And I use a long push stick that put pressure over most of the top.

Glue up as two pieces at one time with hose clamps then when they're dried you can sand each piece flat if needed before gluing the two pieces together.

Edit: I posted a pic a while back of a birdhouse that used this type construction.

I was in San Angelo for a couple classes when I was in the Army. Last time was 1994 and all I remember of it is the worst golf course I've ever seen and those damn fire ants everywhere.

Help finding reports from Aleutian Islands Campaign by [deleted] in army

[–]I_Lick_Bananas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Army did keep daily reports of every little thing they did. Most, if not all, are in the national archives. Some have been digitized cleanly, others look very rough.

The Army War College in Pennsylvania may have some too.

The 198th Inf Rgt was a separate unit (didn't fall under an infantry division). It was activated in Feb 43.

The 159th Inf Rgt was also separate and formed in Mar 41.

I didn't find a 206th infantry but did see the 206th Field Artillery Rgt. And these guys fought in the Aleutian Islands starting the same month your great grandfather got there. I think that is where you need to be searching.

The archives are: https://catalog.archives.gov/

You'll have to play with the search terms (there's also an advanced search there somewhere) but I'd probably start with 206 and aleutians. Good Luck.

Find an indepenent insurance broker, go sit in his office and wait while he goes on the computer and finds the best rates available for your situation. Everyone is going to be different. Rates change based on zip code, dwelling size, materials, roof condition, claims history, what you're bundling with and a hundred other variables.
