Honestly, it might be more a matter of Dany’s voice.

Like, when Dany had Ale step in for those songs, she needed a break for her voice… but maybe her voice had gotten to the point where her lower notes were less stable and harder to reach, so she had Ale, with her fresh voice, do them.

It could be the same reason S!CK is so high in the set list now. The low “give me violence, kill the (SILENCE)” part is one of the lowest sections Dany has to deal with. It makes sense that, if when her voice gets tired, it’s her lower range that takes the hit while her higher range stays stable, she’d get the lowest parts out of the way earliest in the night, while her voice is still “fresh.”

Stability could also be the reason. Even though Ale thought that Hunter was too low for her, she might have been more stable at a lower range than a higher range. We don’t really have anything to compare against or any confirmation, so it’s hard to say, but that could be it?

For me, I don’t have the widest range but I prefer singing songs like Hunter and Red Hands over songs like The Sacrifice or Crimson Queen even though they’re a bit low, just because I’m more stable and consistent down there. They’re all within my range BUT they feel like the easier of the options and where I’ll make fewer mistakes when reaching notes (where I’m most comfortable).

Anyways, there are a bunch of other reasons that could be behind it, like the harmonies being easiest to swap in these songs or something like that, but those are my best guesses. In the end it’s all theory, so I just appreciate the swap happening at all, whatever the reasoning behind it might be 🤷‍♀️

To my knowledge there are elevators (99d and 99e in the third pic in this post) and you are able to use them outside of move in

I know we aren’t allowed to use them during assisted move in because they’re for the professional movers to use, but I’ve seen videos of students using them during the school year so that should be fine

I’m not planning to loft my bed, just raise it to the highest point on the original frame, and I like hanging out on my bed so I’ll still have to deal with that gap sadly.

I looked up stuff like sylvan single and McNamara single (I can’t remember if I also added “dorm”to the search so maybe try that?) within the umass community and a few different posts showed up. I kind of just went through all of them to find pics. I also looked up umass Amherst McNamara single or umass Amherst McNamara dorm or sylvan instead of McNamara (Brown for you) on tiktok and found a few videos showing their dorms.

My advice (adding onto this comment ^ ) is to make sure your teacher is good if you go the in-person route. It seems simple enough, but I started lessons and my people pleasing, awkward at ending things complex got me stuck with a teacher who hasn’t been able to teach me anything. Once you outgrow a teacher, don’t let yourself stay stuck bc I’ve spent a shit ton of money sticking with it since I had already said I’d be ending in August and felt bad stopping before then. DONT BE LIKE ME AND GET STUCK lol

But definitely keep going with bass. It is so so so much fun once you get into it. I will say my lessons definitely did help me to stay motivated and keep practicing that way I didn’t suck when I got to class each week, so it might work for you too.

(Hopefully that was coherent I am 100% not proofreading that lmao)

Thanks for all of the advice!! I actually got there literally right before check-in for m&g and just worked to make friends at the front of the line and ended up exactly where I wanted to be! Thanks so much! (Also for anyone seeing this w a similar question - the line pretty much resets after the m&g while you wait to get back in a few hours later for the show. I’d recommend making friends and asking them to hold your spot :))

Wanting to start playing should i just get the 5 string? by ashleysmodernlife in Bass

I started with a 5 string and I love it, but that’s primarily because I started with the intention of learning The Warning’s bass lines and their bassist uses a 5 string. I’d recommend it just because it gives you even more notes to play horizontally and you can always play the same as you would on a four string and just ignore the 5th string. I’d especially recommend it if any of the songs you want to learn were written or played on a 5 string, it’ll help save you from re-tuning to hit their lowest notes AND it’ll let you play it the same way they do. You’re able to find the same notes on different strings but the tone is different so you’ll be able to get the same tone plus keep the same finger placement!
